New York: Columbia U of P, 1986: 16, 300. … the nowhere, implied by the word ‘utopia’ itself and by the descriptions of Thomas More: a place which exists in no real place, a ghost city; a river with no water; a prince with no people, and so on. What must be emphasized is the benefit of this special extraterritoriality. From this ‘no place’ an exterior glance is cast on our reality, which suddenly looks strange, nothing more being taken for granted. The field of the possible is now open beyond that of the actual; it is a field, therefore, for alternative ways of living. … While his utopia is an alternative to reality, More says clearly that he has no hope that it will be implemented. As a vehicle for irony, utopia may provide a critical tool for undermining reality, but it is also a refuge against reality. In cases like these, when we cannot act, we write. The act of writing allows a certain flight which persists as one of the characteristics of literary utopias.

El campo de lo posible está ahora abierto más alla de lo establecido; es un campo, entonces, que permite maneras alternativas de vida. … Aunque su utopía es una alternativa a la realidad, More dice claramente que no hay esperanza de que sea implementada. Como vehículo para la ironía, la utopía proporciona un instrumento crítico que permite socavar la realidad, pero también es un refugio contra la realidad. En casos como ésos, en los cuales no podemos actuar, escribimos. El acto de escribir permite cierto vuelo que persiste como una de las características de las utopías literarias.
