A contradiction exists between what the character thinks and what the reader or audience knows. Dramatic irony is when Elie and his family are on the train to the concentration camps. We know where they are being taken to, (and so does the crazy lady on the train) but everyone else doesn't. Dramatic irony
Words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant. "Work or crematorium - the choice is yours."They are posed are real options, but in reality, the Jews never really had any power over their fate. Verbal irony
An event occurs which directly contradicts the expectation of the reader or audience. "Three days after the liberation of Buchenwald I became very ill with food poisoning. I was transferred to the hospital and spent two weeks between life and death. -Situational Irony: He wasn't expecting to get sick from eating all of the food he did, he was just hungry. Situational irony
