What is Confucianism? • A philosophy that developed in the late 6th century by a man named Confucius (551-479BC) • The Key to Confucius's philosophy was how to live life correctly, and how to behave • Basic thought= if people behaved the way they’re supposed to, we could solve all of societies problems

Sensitive Nursing Issues • Maternity care= very important = The woman is protected throughout the pregnancy by the Tai-shen (spirit of the fetus), and anyone who is guilty of giving her ill feelings will be punished. • Special ritual performed following the birth of the placenta • The mother is placed on a special diet and rest for a full month after delivery.

Views on Death and Dying • Relative cry out aloud to inform the neighbors • When in mourning, family wears clothes made of coarse material • Food & significant objects of the deceased are placed into the coffin • “Willow branch”=symbolizes soul of person • Rituals performed on the 7th, 9th, & 49th day after burial & on the 1st & 3rd anniversary of their death

  8. Communication • Since Confucianism was founded in China during the Han dynasty, the base root language is Chinese • When the Han dynasty grew, it enabled Confucianism to expand all the way through Southeast Asia

  9. Family • Confucius believed that a family that works together makes a better household and a better society • Most important emphasis is placed on children being loyal and obedient to their parents.

  10. Rituals • In Confucianism the meaning of rituals isn’t the same as it is in a religions. • Rituals are what you do in everyday life to lead a peaceful life • They are centered around actions that uplift the quality of life, a healthy society, and healthy people

  11. Nutrition/Dietary Practices No specific dietary guideline!

  12. Faith • Confucianism is not a religion, it does not have a clergy or leadership, and followers do not worship a god, or gods. • Their faith lies more with moral teachings, and ethical humanism • The temples are built in honor of Confucius

  13. Historic Temples The oldest Confucian temple is located in Taiwan Inside view of the temple

Transcultural nursing process • There are not any sensitive issues when it comes to applying nursing interventions, except that they should be treated with respect and confidentiality. • A popular saying of Confucius: “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do unto others.”, is a good perspective to go by in nursing
