Energy Transfers and Transformations
Law of Conservation of Energy • Energy can NOT be created or destroyed • It is just moves from one object to another, or is transformed from one form to another Ex/ Chemical energy in a battery is changed into light energy and thermal (heat) energy in a flashlight. If it is an open system, some energy may be “lost” to the environment (usually as thermal energy/heat)
Energy Transfer • Occurs when energy moves from one object to another without changing form • Ex/ kinetic energy of a bat transfers to the ball it hits • Ex/ kinetic energy of a foot transfers to the ball it kicks
Energy Transformations • Occur when one form of energy is converted to another form • Energy transformations are inefficient – meaning some energy is always transferred to the environment as heat and/or sound
Example of energy transformation… Electrical energy from the power outlet in your house is transferred to a light bulb and transformed into radiant (light) energy and thermal (heat) energy.
