Program Basics • Admission Requirements • Online application • Decisions made once every two years – 12/15 • Advising • Denny Berry serves as an advisor upon admission • Courses are planned on a prescribed basis for the cohort with the opportunity to take 3 electives • Length of Study • Part-time enrollment: 2 courses/semester • Typically 3-4 years depending on time required to finish capstone dissertation • Computer Access - Internet access required for hybrid courses
Admissions Process Two-tiered selection process • Screening based on paper credentials and current leadership position • Selection based on face-to-face Saturday session featuring • An introduction to the program and Q&A • Case study exercise • Elevator speech on leadership • Individual interviews • Writing sample
Program of Study • Integration of theory, experience, and research • Cohort-based • First and second year: Strong core of theory and research • Field-based practicum projects • Use of case studies • Customized areas of specialization • Third year: Study of a problem of practice culminating in a Capstone Dissertation
Overview of Coursework • Core leadership courses (18 hours) • 6 courses that address the key facets of leadership • Foundations of Leadership Theory • Cognitive Dimensions of Leadership • Visioning, Planning & Strategizing for Success • Designing Learning Environments • Optimizing Human Capital in Organizations • Developing Organizational Capacity • Research sequence (12 hours) • 4 courses taught in tandem with leadership courses • Focus on applied research methods and program evaluation
Overview of Coursework • Electives (27 hours) • Transfer credits from master’s degree (up to 18 hours) • Offerings at the Northern Virginia Center • Social Foundations • Reading • Special Education • Capstone Seminar (3 hours) • Capstone Dissertation (12 hours)
Course Delivery • Weekend classes and summer residencies • Week-long course during first summer to build collegiality and appreciation for the diversity of experiences and perspectives of the group members • High-impact weekends of Fridays/Saturdays once a month throughout the year
