First theme The brute within Everyone has "strong and often warring emotions” leading to behavior considered taboo by society. Encountering the indifferent universe can cause this brute to rise up, often in violent ways. Brute=animalistic, savage violent person For example, the Incredible Hulk.
Second theme The indifference of nature as man struggles to survive Nature demands much of man to survive. Man sometimes struggles against nature’s forces, but nature does not care. In other words, the harsh forces of nature do not subside or make things any easier for man.
Third theme The influence of "heredity and environment" (or one's background and surroundings) on the development of a person. Nature vs. nurture Man’s ability to survive is based upon both heredity and the environment.
Fourth theme Determinism The inability to express free will or personal agency. For every event exist conditions that could cause no other event to occur. (predetermined outcome)
Fifth theme The dark side of the human condition
