Tips for Cover Letters • Address it to a specific person, if possible • The body of the letter about half a page • Why you are sending it (objective statement) • What response you are expecting • Your information – name, address, e-mail, phone number • Close with appreciation and/or forward-looking statement
Tips for Cover Letters - continued • Check for accuracy with names, titles, addresses • Be brief – 30 seconds to make an impression • Clean, attractive page with no errors in capitalization, spelling, usage • Make specific to the company, not generic • Be professional, not “cute”
Tips for Cover Letters - continued • If no contact name is given in a job listing, the greeting of the cover letter may read: • Dear Human Resources Department: OR • Dear Hiring Manager: The greeting must have a colon (:) after it.
Tips for Cover Letters- continued • Use standard fonts for letters and resumes. • Size = 10 or 12 • Type = Standard such as Times New Roman • Stay away from decorative fonts, backgrounds, or borders unless the job is for an art position. • No long paragraphs; bullet points best (resume)
