Rothberg, University of Rochester, DMR 0804960 Conjugated chromophores are widely used in emissive organic films for use in light-emitting diodes, phosphors and sensors. Photobleaching is a common limitation on the utility of these materials in those applications. We have shown that ~ 10 nm films of the organic light-emitting diode workhorse materials Alq3 can deliver nearly two orders of magnitude more fluorescent photons over the life of the film when placed on suitable nanotextured silver substrates. Our work has tested the hypothesis that the improvement in photostability is due to reduction of the excited state lifetime by plasmon-enhancement of the emission so that attendant photochemical excited state reactions are suppressed. We find that the stability is correlated with excited state lifetime but that this does not quantitatively explain the magnitude of the effect. Conformational effects on luminescence efficiencyLewis J. Rothberg, University of Rochester, DMR 0804960 Our program integrates undergraduate research efforts. Luminescence efficiency of conjugated polymers used in organic electronic applications depends strongly on the organization of the polymer. We have done a systematic study by varying the polymer morphology using gradual changes in solvent composition while measuring how the absorption spectrum, luminescence spectrum and luminescence efficiency change. This was done in polythiophenes, leading candidate materials for organic solar cell applications. The absorption spectrum is of particular importance as its match to the solar spectrum limits the potential efficiency. We found that the spectra can be explained by assuming that there are only two types of chromophores in the polymer. This result helps us to determine the spectra it is possible to obtain by varying polymer conformation. Undergraduate Jonathan Raybin presenting his work at summer student poster session
