Struggle with Mathematics By Keeyoun Moon
Possible Reasons • There may be many reasons why children have math phobia. • Computational weaknesses • Difficulty making connections • Incomplete knowledge of the language of math • Difficulty Comprehending the Visual and Spatial Aspects and Perceptual Difficulties.
Computational weakness • Students may understand the basic mathematical concepts, but due to the errors they make, the students may be stressed to find the specific “correct answer.” From this stress, the students can start to hate doing math.
Difficulty making Connections • A student may not be able to make the connection or the relationship of mathematics to what it is representing. A student struggles when he cannot relate the conceptual aspects of math with reality.
Incomplete knowledge of the language of Math • There are different cultural diversities inside the classrooms, and language may be a huge barrier when confronted with mathematics. Uncommon vocabularies, and difficult terminologies affect the attitudes of the students. Word problems, especially, are the most difficult to understand.
Difficulty comprehending the visual and spatial aspects and perceptual difficulties • Much uncommon among the students, there are a few who has the inability to effectively visualize math concept. This is a very serious problem, the most severe. These students do not understand the most simple concepts of math, and therefore has use their memorization to the verbal or written descriptions of math concepts.
Other Problems: • Students with Output difficulties • Students with organizational difficulties • Attention problems • Difficulties with multiple tasks • Students who learn differently from the majority
Reflection as a Teacher I believe that that these strategies may be helpful to students: • Encouraging students • Find variety of ways students can learn math • Show positive attitude towards math • Tutoring • Relate math to real life
