  2. Objectives for the Day • Describe the agricultural and technological innovations that led to industrialization in Great Britain and its subsequent spread to continental Europe, the United States, and Japan AND • Analyze the causes and effects of imperialism

  3. 6.02 The Industrial Revolution • The Industrial Revolution started first in England. • It started because new farm technologies and inventions made it so less people were needed to farm. These people went to look for work in the cities. • At the same time, new technologies were developed in the cities to create factories. Now goods could be produced fast and efficient! And labor was needed! • This Revolution eventually spread to the rest of Europe, America, and Japan.

  5. 6.02 Assignment Directions Step 1: Choose one innovation or technological breakthrough of the Industrial Revolution. You may find the list below helpful. Feel free to choose a topic that is not on the list. • the growth of railroads • the factory system • the improvements in mining • the growth of shipping • the invention of the telegraph • steamboats and canals

  6. 6.02 Directions Continued Step 2 and 3: • Research the positive and negative consequences of this innovation. Pick a Web 2.0 tool. What to Include? Your digital presentation should include the following elements: • at leastfive slides • at leastone image for both the positive and negative effects • description of the intended purpose of the innovation or technology • summary of at least two positive and two negative effects of the innovation or technology on the social, economic, or political aspects of society

  7. 6.04 Imperialism • Imperialism: the system under which nations take over other countries either by conquering them or by gaining control over their political and economic systems. • Why would a country want to do this? • To get metals and resources: Ex. Gold, Wood, Ore • Get consumers for new produced factory goods • To increase their status • To compete with other nations • To support racial bias and “civilize” less developed nations and peoples.

How could a country get away with it? • European powers "shopping" for colonies to exploit looked mainly for those that were politically and militarily weak and that had abundant natural resources. (Ex. China) • Once there, they would use propaganda to show how they were there “civilizing”. Helped them to justify. Does this still happen today? Most colonies gained their independence in the early 1900’s. No European countries hold a place today, like they did then. In some cases, colonialism has given way to a more gentle system. However, many countries are still dealing with the effects, both positive and negative.

  9. 6.04 Directions Step 1: Choose one of the following countries: • Algeria • The Philippines • Korea • The Congo • India • China Step 2: Write two editorial articles. Editorials are articles that provide your opinion on a topic. One should support imperialism. The second should reject imperialism.

  10. Each article should be one paragraph of at least six sentences. Use the evidence and information you learned in the lesson in each of your arguments. Think about the following questions as you begin your pre-writing process and ultimately your final product: • How is imperialism impacting the economy? • How is imperialism impacting culture? • How might the colonization of the area impact the course of history of the colony? • In what ways does imperialism affect the way we see other cultures and peoples? Botheditorials must: • be at least one paragraph with at least six sentences: one for the introduction, at least one for each question, and one for a conclusion • express one side of the issue (support or against) • use specific examples from the lesson for support • focus on one particular colony or region
