  1. “My entrance to the blended-online teaching experience” By Nubia Revilla AISM, Maputo, February 15, 2014

  2. What  types communication, protocols and logistics support do I currently facilitate which are effective in creating my learning community culture  in my courseand what areas do I feel I could enhance

  3. Introduction • First attempt to create a blended online class at School. All classes are face to face. Not a culture of a blended online experience existed before. Take in consideration age group. • Circumstances: • A. Security/Kidnapping: Parents decided to keep kids at home • B. Teacher away in the US: need to stay on top of my teaching. • Decide to try out the experience of teaching online-blended class with 7th grade Humanities • Not all defined yet but ongoing process and working on it

  4. Communication**Class periods are usually 2 or 3 time per week. When teacher is absent: they work with Sub Teacher and Teacher online -Skype • Asynchronized Communication: • 1. Manageback: Planner & Units available • 2. Email : available 100% of the time • 3. Weebly : units are there in the weebly for them to reach any time. • 4.Videos • Synchronized Communication: • Phone message : SMS or Whatsapps • Skype • Face to face: in class • Communication: FB Chat and Gmail Chat

  5. How to enhance Communication? • Another option : Create a discussion forum • Chat is the easiest option and need to incorporate one in the Weebly- • Videos about the lesson: Could use it more pre recorded videos – • Concentrate communication mainly in one spot: what is their favorite spot ? • Feedback still take too long – Teacher • Dedicate more time to set online individual help-

  6. Protocols • Simple protocols • Students have face to face class with teacher 2 or 3 times per week. 90 minute periods- Techlab • They have to go in Managebac daily and see general instructions about the class- • Work in class with weebly- At home use it to complete tasks- • Each week they have to complete two tasks from weebly and submit • Each week they have to have a group work /discussion in class and submit notes-

  7. Protocols: What to enhance or improve • 1.Protocols are not very clear to students yet, because not clearly defined. • 2. Work in progress and first experience • 3. Need to define them better and communicate them to students- • 4. Need more consistency • 5. Need a video tour to explain them

  8. Logistic Support • From School: Use of computers : laptops and iPad • Need to be reserved – not always available • Internet service provided: slow- • Strong support from the Tech teachers- • Parents reluctant to “bring your own device” policy- • Working to get better Internet services and bring your own device required- • More support from parents

  9. Conclusion • First attempt of blended online class • Students do not have a culture yet- • But there is a definite connection established- • MYP : connection with real world need • Need more logistic support • Need better internet connection • Teacher need to define clear goals and protocols • Make it a fun & interesting experience

  10. Sources • Technology teachers at school: big support and tutoring • History of our world textbook • HistoricalAssociation: http://www.history.org.uk/resources/resource_3876.html • Blended Online learning articles provided
