CTN: Carbondale Terrier Network Distribute Information Through Your School Cable TV System
Why? • Paper copies of bulletin were printed and distributed daily to all teachers & staff – need to reduce paper. • Daily bulletin was not always read in all classes. • School is already wired for centralized cable TV distribution. • We needed improved communication. • We never participated in Channel One.
Equipment Needed • Channel Deletion Filter • RF Modulator • Cable Splitter/Combiner • Video Signal Switchbox • Computer for Video Distribution • VCR/DVD Player
Channel Deletion Filter Place in path of incoming cable feed to eliminate signal from chosen channel. Has IN and OUT. We used a Channel 19 filter at the suggestion of the cable company (was QVC). Price: Around $600 from a cable TV supplier
RF Modulator Device to convert video and audio signals to RF signal and send into cable distribution system. Can program any channel to use for broadcasting. Price: Around $600 from a cable TV supplier Video and Audio inputs (RCA/phono types) and coaxial cable output.
Send combined signal into distribution system Cable System Plan Cable feed from Channel Deletion Filter Cable Distribution Amplifier Combine signal from cable amplifier with signal from modulator Line From RF Modulator
Video Switch A simple video selector switch can be used to combine sources and supply one output to go to the modulator. Price: $30 We currently have 2 computers hooked up. We will add a DVD/VCR player.
Audio Output Audio must be connected to the video source switchbox along with the video. We use speakers with a headphone jack to control the sound output. We can turn off the speakers and no sound will be sent through the system. If we need sound for the news broadcast, we can turn on the speakers and control the output with the volume control.
Dual Computers We have one old computer running basic slides and a second machine that is high powered to handle slides and video. We switch the signal to the old machine when we are updating the current slides.
Computer Video Output In order to get a TV signal from your computer, you must either have a special video card with a TV out option, or you must use a Computer-to-TV converter as shown here. Important note: When playing a video clip or DVD on a computer, it might not show up on both the computer screen and TV. You might have to check the settings for the video card and make the TV the primary display in order to distribute in through the cable system.
Channel 19 The PowerPoint Presentation runs constantly and is visible throughout the school on Channel 19. Normally there would be no sound. Teachers often just leave it on in their classrooms.
Daily Routine • Secretary adds announcements to our website • When we are ready to edit the slides, we switch the signal to the old computer. • We check the website around 1:00 and add slides to PowerPoint along with any other information like menus to the presentation on the new computer. • When editing is complete, we switch the signal back to the new computer.
PowerPoint Notes • Can use animated graphics • Can do slide transitions and object animation • We set all slides to advance automatically after 7 seconds (in slide transition menu) • Loop continuously until “Esc” in the Slide Show-Set up show menu • Can imbed video
Other Uses • Multimedia Class produces news program • Information slideshows during events like the State Speech Tournament and parent nights • Videos produced by classes or organizations • Live video feed from somewhere in building
