My Proposal: Inquiry into the IB Teacher Awards at the University of Bath • International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) • Mission Statement • Four Programmes:Primary Years (PYP) Middle Years (MYP) Diploma (DP) IB Career-related Certificate (IBCC). • Founded in 1968, they currently work with over 1 million students in 3,477 schools in 143 countries.

  5. Education in BC • Declining enrolment over the past several years. • School Districts want to preparestudents for a Global Economy. • The IB Programme has more than tripled in Canada over the past decade and the majority of the 310 IB World schools in Canada are through the public sector.

  6. The IB Teacher Award • This certificate aims to formally recognize teachers' knowledge and understanding of curricular, pedagogical and assessment issues involved in implementing the particular IB programme they teach or are intending to teach. • It is available to teachers of three IB programmes (Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme). • It is tailored for:1) inexperienced teachers with limited or no previous IB teaching experience2) experienced teachers with limited or no previous IB teaching experience3) those interested in embarking on a teaching career involving an IB programme

  7. IB Diploma • Canadian higher institutions receive the second highest number of IB Programme transcripts (after the USA). • In 2008, UBC received by far the largest number of IB transcripts among all universities in the world.

IB Partnerships • The IBO partnered with various universities in 2007 to create these IB Teacher Awards due to growing demand from teachers who increasingly inquired on either becoming an IB teacher or furthering their Professional Development as an IB teacher. • Students take courses in: ~ Assessment ~ Curriculum Studies ~ Education in an International Context~ Understanding Learners and Learning ~ Research Methods in Education.

  10. Department of Education • Ranked “University of the Year 2011-12 • One of the first to pilot IB Teacher Awards • Offers 3 MA Programmes in Education • Students have the opportunity to gain either Level 1 and/or Level 2 IB Teacher Award

Dr. Mary Hayden • Director if the Centre for the study of Education in an International Context (CEIC) • Editor of the Journal of Research in International Context • Trustee of the Alliance for International Education • Member of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) • Academic Advisor to the ILMP

Dr. Jeff Thompson • Teaches, supervises, researches and publishes through the (CEIC) • Has worked closely with the IBO since it’s inception in the 1960’s • Chair of the IPC’s Advisory Board • Founding editor of the Journal of Research in International Context • Founding Chair of the Alliance for International Education.

  13. Dr. Stephen Gough • Formally the Director of Education (now the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies) • Director of the Centre for Research in Education • Director for Research in Education and the Environment

  14. Questions Considered • a) Why they choose to offer the IB Teacher Awards? (are there reports?) • b) What was involved in implementing the Awards? • c) Statistics on the success of the program. • d) What other programs did they consider? • e) What were the upfront costs? How did they budget for this? • f) How has the program been enhanced from implementing the Awards into their MA Programmes? • g) How has implementing this program aided in internationalizing education at the university? • h) Are the students/teachers taking the program local or international? (Stats?) • i) What are enrolment numbers? Do they increase? • j) What types of courses do they offer? • k) Who are the Professors and staff involved in this program? • l) What has the University learned since the implementation of the program?

Why they chose the IB Teacher Awards Minimal Disruption to Current Programs • At the time, the Department of Education was offering their MA program with an option to study Internationalism in Education. • Because the Awards content was aligned with the coursework already in place through the program, there was no restructuring required to the program. • What they did offer was an expansion of their MA program to include the IB Teacher Awards, as well as having an option to take the IB Teacher Awards as a stand alone (with the ability to apply it to an MA in the future).

Why they chose the IB Teacher Awards International Baccalaureate Research Unit • The IBO and the Centre for the study of Education in an International Context had collaborated (and were provided funding) to host an International Baccalaureate Research Unit at the University of Bath. • The aim of the research unit was to facilitate research within the International Baccalaureate Organization and the wider international education community. • Therefore, there were many connections to not only the IBO, but to the wider teaching community as well. • Unfortunately, the research unit is no longer in service as the funding made available to the project ceases to exist.

Why they chose the IB Teacher Awards Journal Faculty Support • At the time, Jeff Thompson was the editor (Mary Hayden is the current editor in chief) of the Journal of Research in International Context located at the University. • The IB Teacher Awards is not only enhanced by the availability of scholars involved with various facets of the IB, but also students have the availability to have their work published in the journal. • Most Faculty members who are involved in the coursework of the IB Teacher Awards are supportive of the program. • Even though most (if not all) of the Faculty have not had the experience of teaching in an IB classroom themselves, their academic work and research supports it. • Since the Faculty was already teaching courses conducive to the IBO requirements, then their course offering did not have to change.

Why they chose the IB Teacher Awards Flexibility in Course Offerings • Study Centres: For the past 30 years, the Department of Education has offered Study Centres for their students enrolled in the MA programs. • Summer/Winter School: Students are able to take ‘units’ (or we what we could courses) as an intensive 1 or 2 week option in July and/or December to meet the requirements of their MA. • Distance/Online Learning: Students have the option to take courses online in collaborative synchronous and asynchronous settings. • On Campus: Regular studies offered throughout the year through seminars and Faculty support. Courses can be taken full or part-time. • `

  21. Who are the Professors and staff involved in this Program? Notable features of the Department • wide ranging experience and expertise of lecturers and research staff in the development of research projects, both nationally and internationally; • a research environment which encourages students in all courses to focus on research activities; • access for postgraduate students to various seminars and research activities; • strong links with schools locally, nationally and internationally; • dynamic relationships with a range of other organizations, nationally and internationally. Why does offering the IBTA work for Bath? • Established Centre for the study of Education in an International Context. • They publish their own Journal. • Centre’s Director and Emeritus have had significant ties to the IBO since its inception. • Faculty support the program as it relates to the courses they teach and research they conduct. • Their present MA programme was used as a framework for the IB Teacher Awards (no restructuring). • Variety in Course offerings (study centres, campus, online, summer/winter schools).

Internationalized Curriculum • The University of Bath has seen internationalized curriculum as important from the inception of the International Baccalaureate Organization in the 1960’s. • They continue to modify and adapt their program to meet the needs of their students as well as the diverse students in which their students teach. • The department thrives on their excellence in not only research, but delivery of quality and diverse MA programming that meets the needs of teachers within the current public education system, in addition to extending it to include internationalized curriculum as well.

  24. Possibilities for SFU Is the IB Teacher Awards an option? • An IB influenced PDP Module could be offered as a pilot project. • This could include focusing on one programme (i.e. PYP) or all levels of IB training. • Students could obtain their teaching certificate as well as their IB Teacher certification. • This may require an extension of an extra semester to complete the requirements. • Teacher graduates could also take the courses to gain their Level 1 or 2 certifications.

  25. Questions to Consider • Faculty Support in internationalization. What are our current staffing profiles? interests? future hires? • What are our current course offerings? Could any apply to the current courses included in the IB Teacher Awards? • How could having students taking the IBTA aid in Faculty research interests? • Provide various options for course delivery: on campus, online options, summer/winter schools. • Availability to both undergraduate (PDP) and teacher graduates.
