  7. What is Reasonable Adjustment? • providing students with disabilities with appropriate assistance so they can participate on the same basis as students who do not have a disability. • The legislation requires all TAFE NSW Institutes provide RA

  8. Examples of Reasonable adjustment RA is negotiated and individualised to meet the specific needs of the student. For example; • Extra breaks/ time/scribe/ during an assessment • Providing a student with an adjustable desk /chair in class

  10. Role of Teacher Consultants Assesses for: • reasonable adjustment assessment • support services: E.g. Note takers, interpreters, support teachers • 1:on:1 tutorial support • separate rooms & extra time for exams • liaise with classroom teachers

  11. What does Deaf/Hearing Impaired mean? Pre-lingual deafness: Deafness acquired before language acquired • mild moderate severe profound The Deaf community • Distinct, culture, identity social group Hearing Impaired: • Due to Illness, accident, ageing.

  12. Issues for Deaf/Hearing Impaired? Obvious issues student may experience: • not be able to hear the teacher/trainer AT ALL • may miss a lot of what the teacher says • misses bits and pieces of what the teacher says • can’t communicate with the teacher • can’t communicate with fellow students • misses explanations, instructions, late changes, anecdotes, corrections homework info.

  13. Tips for teacher/trainers • communicate directly as possible. (i.e. F2f and slow down) • modify your language: become familiar with the appropriate language level for the student • check for understanding regularly, encourage & reinforce • use whiteboard frequently to record verbal teaching content • be inclusive(i.e. direct questions to the student. Ask them how their weekend was?) • use plenty of white space

Students with an intellectual disability Students with an ID are diverse in their abilities May experience difficulties with: • Grasping abstract concepts • Understanding complex terms • Problem solving • Recalling information • Reading and writing • Transferring skills from one situation to another • Communication

Inclusive teaching for students with ID • breaking a task down into smaller chunks • practical hands on experience • frequent repetition and review • specific and immediate feedback • consistency and routine • Guided practice • Shorter periods of learning interspersed with breaks • Use of visuals/colour/pictures

  16. Students with a physical disability • Disability can be obvious or not so obvious • Student may also have other disabilities • Reasonable adjustment is negotiated and informed by Medical Report • Reasonable adjustments examples include: tutorial support, a note taker, reduced program, adaptive technology.
