Regional Variations in Sounding Derived Significant Severe Weather Parameters Jeff Craven, NWS Sullivan/Milwaukee WI NWA Annual Meeting Cleveland OH, Oct 2006
Two Datasets • 0000z Soundings from across CONUS 1997-1999 (3 Years) • 2100-0300z, within 100 nm of sounding • 0000z Soundings from 1957-1996 that include only Significant Severe reports • 2+” Hail • 65+ knot gusts • F2+ Tornadoes
Ohio Valley Datasets • Significant Severe Categories only • Individual Parameters • (Sample Size on bottom)
Seasonal Definitions • Cold Season (November to April) • Warm Season (May to October) • Use Ohio Valley as example (have all of them completed)
Parameter Combinations Product of MLCAPE and 0-6 km shear (Significant Severe Parameter, AKA Craven-Brooks Sig Svr) (Units in m3 s-3)
Parameter Combinations Strong Tornado Parameter MLCAPE * 0-1 km shear * 0-6 km shear _______________________________ MLLCL height * DCAPE (Units in m s-2 acceleration?)
Regional/Seasonal Variations • Significant Severe Categories only • Combination Parameters: • Significant Severe Parameter • Strong Tornado Parameter
Summary • Some regional variation, but thresholds seem to work pretty well across the CONUS (20,000-30,000 on Sig Svr, 0.25 on Strong Tor Parm) • In general, higher combination of MLCAPE and 0-6 km shear, more intense convection is • Expected differences betweenCold (Low CAPE, High Shear)and Warm Season (High CAPE, Low Shear) severe events
