Where is the culture located Hahoe Tal is the name given after 'Hahoe' village where is located in Korea Gyeongsangnam-do, Andong city. The village is a valuable part of Korean culture because it preserves Joseon period-style architecture, folk traditions, valuable books, and old tradition of clan-based villages. The village was located the foot of mountain Hwasan and next the river Nakdonggang. The village was elected by South Korea and is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The festival/ceremony used The Hahoe masks of Korea are usually used in plays and in ceremonial performances nowadays. The masks were originally created for shamanistic ceremonies and for spiritual purposes. Instead of supernatural beings and objects like what masks usually are in other religions, the Hahoe masks usually represent humans, and represent people like a women, a scholar and a bride. Only men wore the masks and performed in plays. Traditionally, the performances had no set time and could last for a few hours to all night. Today, they are more structured and only last an hour or so.
The meaning or symbolism of the masks Originally, there were 14 main Hahoe masks that were used anciently but two were lost. The 14 masks include two of head monks, a bride, an aristocrat, a scholar, a monk, a butcher, a servant, an old widow, a fool, a lady, a bachelor, an outhouse, and a hulk. All the remaining 12 masks are considered as Cultural Treasures of Korea.
