Definition: Put Down A hurtful statement directed at someone or a group of people.
Why do people put each other down??? • To make themselves feel; better while others feel bad • To Impress Others (Fit in) • They do not like/think that they are better than the other person • Retaliation/Revenge • Jealousy
Put Downs you have heard both in and out of school: • “You’re Stupid” • “You’re Retarded” • “You’re Ugly” • “You’re Fat” • “You’re Gay” • “Nobody likes you”
How do people feel after experiencing a put down? • Hurt • Sad • Confused • Angry
How to Handle Put Downs! • What should you do if someone puts you down? • Here are some strategies you can use…
Agree with the person! Examples: • “Yeah, I know right.” • “How did you know?” • “Who told you?” • “I know, isn’t that crazy?”
Make a joke of it! Examples: • “Are you sure your talking to the right person?” • “Watch it or I’ll call my lawyer.” • “I just love your sense of humor.” • “That was supposed to be a secret.” • “Really?..., That’s Nice!”
“Cut the person off with a quick comeback.” Examples: • “I disagree” • “Big Deal” • “So What?” • “Whatever!” • “Who cares?” • “And?”
What can you say if you get a put down from an adult? • That doesn’t help me! • “I feel bad when you say things like that” • “Please don’t say that. It hurts my feelings.”
What do you say when the put down is over??? • Make sure to give yourself positive affirmation
Compliments • While class begins please be thinking about the nicest (or one of the nicest) thing anyone has said to you, and how that made you feel. • Please get out a pen or pencil. • Goals: -Understand the importance of compliments in establishing a healthy adolescent identity. -Experience the effects of compliments on building self-esteem and identity.
