  1. WIKI Presentation by Thomas Shumate October 10, 2011

  2. What is a Wiki? • The creator of the first wiki, Ward Cunningham, described it as: “The simplest online database that could possibly work.” • Merriam-Webster defines a wiki as: “a Web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections”

  3. What is a Wiki? • More specifically a wiki is: a website, that runs on wiki server software, that allows multiple users to edit and create webpages and its content using a simplified markup language or text editor.

  4. Wiki Was Born • In 1994, Ward Cunningham began development of wiki software and the first wiki in an effort to facilitate communication between software developers. • On March 24, 1995, Ward Cunningham released the first wiki website: Wiki Wiki Web, for the Portland Pattern Repository. This site is still active and thriving today!

  5. Have I Ever Used a Wiki? • Almost everyone who has ever used the internet to conduct research of any kind has visited and used a wiki. • Famous Wikis: • Wikipedia, www.wikipedia.org • Answers.com, www.wiki.answers.com • Wiki Wiki Web, http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WelcomeVisitors

  6. What are Wikis used for? • Wikis are used by corporations, businesses, schools, communities (globally and locally), groups of friends and individuals for countless and various purposes. • Wikis are used as corporate intranets, public encyclopedias and information databases (both privately and publically) • Wikis can be used as a tool to facilitate project communication, group learning, documentation and even function as personal notebook.

  7. Benefits vs. Disadvantages • Since the content of a wiki can be changed by a user, in some instances without review, the trustworthiness of the information must be questioned. • This issue can be controlled by allowing various levels of access to users of the wiki (and negated almost entirely if it is a private wiki and sources are limited to a controlled group, i.e. academic peers). • Wiki’s ability to be quickly and easily corrected counterbalances this disadvantage. • Exposes users to security issues (i.e. malware).

  8. Wiki’s impact to the IT world • Wikis will continue to have an impact on all professionals in the IT field and for many outside the field. • Wikis will continue to be used as communication tools between professionals within a specific field and/or on a specific subject. • Wikis will continue to be used as information resources and public databases.

  9. Check it out! Here is an awesome video by the company Common Craft, LLC, that explains in plain English what a wiki is and its purpose in a fun and interesting way. www.commoncraft.com/video/wikis
