  7. 2. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.

  9. 3. Study your lab assignment before you come to class and have your Pre Lab completed. Pay particular attention to dangerous reagents or special safety precautions.

  10. 4. Never work in the lab without proper supervision.

  11. 5. Never perform an unauthorized experiment.

  12. 6. Never pipet by mouth and never inhale gases or other vapors.

  13. 7. Be careful with glass equipment.

  14. 8. Never eat, drink or chew gum in any part of the lab area.

  15. 9. Report any accident, injury, chemical spill or inappropriate procedure at once.

  16. 10. Tie back long hair and secure loose clothing.

  17. 11. Do not leave a lit burner unattended.

  18. 12. Read labels of reagent bottles carefully before using the chemicals.

  19. 13. Never return unused chemicals to a reagent bottle. Do not put a pipet, dropper or spatula in a reagent bottle – pour the reagent into a small beaker instead.

  20. 14. Always pour acid slowly into water to dilute – never pour water into acid. (Remember: ADD ACID)

  21. 15. Place broken glass, solid substances and used chemicals in designated container. Never throw a chemical down the sink unless given permission by Mrs. Hodgson.

  22. 16. Keep your lab area as clean as possible at all times.

  23. 17. Wash your hands with soap and water after each experiment.

  24. 18. To test the odor of a solution, do not hold it directly under nose. Hold it away and wave your hand over the solution towards you. (wafting)

  25. 19. Use the fumehood when working with volatile substances or poisonous vapors.

  26. Emergency Situations 1. Spray fire extinguisher left to right at the base of the flame. Where is the fire extinguisher? ______________________

  27. 2. If clothing catches fire wall calmly to the safety shower. If your lab partner’s clothing catches fire use the fire blanket to smother the fire. How do you use the safety shower?_____________________ Where is the fire blanket?_____________

  28. 3. Corrosive chemicals splashed on skin should be flushed off promptly with copious amounts of flowing water for at least 15 minutes. If splashed on clothing, the clothing must be removed while under the safety shower. Stay under the shower for at least 15 minutes while Mrs. Hodgson calls the nurse or 911.

  29. 4. A corrosive chemical in the eye is a very serious matter. Get to an eye wash fountain immediately (within 15 seconds if possible). Wash the eye for at least 15 minutes while someone else calls the nurse. Keep the eyelid open fully; move the eyeballs up, down, left, right, criss-cross, round and round.   34. Chemistry Materials • 3 ring binder • Dividers • 2nd period – kleenexes • 3rd period – paper towels/lysol wipes • 4th period – hand soap or sanitizer • 5th period – markers or map pencils • 6th period – pencils • 7th period - pens

  35. Grading Policy • Daily Work/Homework – 30% • Labs and Exams – 70% (exams weighted X2 and labs X1)

  36. Retest Policy • PAP classes 1 retest/nine weeks (cannot retest the last exam of the nine weeks or a final exam). Retests are before or after school and have to be done within 5 days (from time you receive initial grade on test). • Core classes same policy but can retest more often.

  37. Absences • Come in for tutorials immediately to find out what you missed. (Do not wait until the next class period to find out what you missed!

  38. Absences • If you are absent the day BEFORE a test you are STILL required to take the test when you return to class. Plenty of advance notice is given when a test is scheduled!

  40. Tutorials • Before school everyday from 8:00am to 8:35am • After school most days. I pick up my kids on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday but I will be back so wait for me! (Unless I have duty or a meeting.)

  41. Exemptions Fall Semester • 9th, 10th, 11th – none • 12th – can exempt all classes

  42. Exemptions Spring Semester • 9th - 1 exemption • 10th – 2 exemptions • 11th – 3 exemptions • 12th – can exempt all classes

  43. Exemptions (Character Traits) • In order to exempt a class: • 90 or above with 3 absences • 85 or above with 2 absences • 80 or above with 1 absence • You CANNOT exempt any class if you: • are truant (skip any class) • go to ISS, GAP, or if you are suspended • have late fees (textbooks/library/counselors)
