Overview Photo 100 Prerequisite - NONE Class limit listed as 24 Waitlist should have not trouble getting in Probably take more-depending space in classroom
Textbook • Photography – special edition for VVC • London, Stone, Upton • 10th edition
Course Description • Photo 100 is an introductory course to teach the fundamentals of black and white photography using a 35mm film camera. Students will use basic camera functions • Shutter speed • Aperture • Focus • Darkroom • These work the same in film and digital
Snapshots vs. Photography • Snapshots • Photography
Students will learn • Elements of design • Texture • Line • Space • Shape • As relates to composition • We will use • Photography studio, outdoor, & photograms
Objectives • Basic manual camera functions • 35mm film • Load, expose, and process B&W film • Create B&W prints in the darkroom • Use design elements to improve composition • Use the studio, & outdoors • Use the darkroom • Assignment critiques and VVC art show
Student Outcomes • Demonstrate working knowledge of aperture, shutter, and focus • Correct exposure of B&W film • Create properly exposed print from negative in the darkroom • Elements: rule of thirds, texture, line, & space to create engaging composition • Basics of studio & outdoor photography • Create a Photogram in the darkroom • Display each project in class.
Prices on Jerry Uelsmann’s prints ( from one gallery in New Orleans) range from $1,600 to $10,500. All on silver gelatin and matted. • Ansel Adams prints from the darkroom $5,000 to $175,000. All on silver gelatin
35mm film-I’m outta here at the break • Why do we do black and white, 35mm film instead of digital
What’s the difference • Example 1 • A leaf Aptus II Digital back for my camera. 22 MegaPixels • Cost about $8,000 plus the camera. Total 61mb; 22x16 inches at 240 DPI • Example 2 • Hasselblad 500 cm 120 film hi-res scan. Develop film plus scan for roll =$17 • 65mb 20x20 @240 DPI
What’s the difference? • Example 3. 35mm color film with hi-res scan • 28.6 MB • Example 4. Canon 5d Mark ii full frame sensor • 31 MB No Photoshop processing.
Here in these Photography classes at VVC we work to move from snapshots to photographs.
We will focus on the elements that will improve your photography using a point-and-shoot camera, a cellphone, film, to full frame digital cameras costing thousands of dollars.
Tones, not color • Because we have no colors in black and white photography everything is represented as white or tones of gray and black.
You might find that you don’t need to buy a Canon 1D-x or Nikon D3x, both costing near $7,000 before you even buy one lens
Student responsibility • 2 key dates. • Sept. 8 – last day for you to drop without a “W” • Oct. 11 – last day to drop with a “W” • Oct. 12 – FIRST day to drop with an “F” • 2 absences and dropped from class on your third absence • Unless other arrangements made, I will drop you. Missed class or lab is the same. Leaving early from the lab is an absence. • Had 2 students that turned in work, then never showed again. Could have dropped, but took an “F”. Keep me informed.
I will take attendance each class session. • Contact for emergency • 15 min. late is an absence • Attendance will be taken after any break • Being in the darkroom during a lecture is an absence • On lab days I will check off attendance until near the end of the period.
Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated • No phones, iPod’s, ear buds in class • No food & drink in darkroom • I taught junior high my first 8 years of teaching and mostly 9th graders my last 10 years. I don’t ever want to do that again. However, I’ve been in college classrooms, as a student, where it would be difficult to tell the difference from the junior high and the junior college except by physical appearance.
Originality • Each student is required to take their own photographs, develop and print their own film. You may have help. • Work from a previous class not accepted • Only photos from Spring 2013 semester • Copying will cause the student to be dropped with a grade of “F” • Unusual situation where a “special” relationship exits. Share camera but not the film. You must develop your own and do your own prints. No half and half.
Can I turn in work late?Glad you asked • Assignment not turned in on time has until next assignment due w/10% reduction in grade • Re-submits can be turned in until 2 weeks before the end of semester. Without penalty! • Key is to get something gradable in on time! • See your syllabus for exact dates
