Warm-UP • Think-Pair-Share • Take 1 minute to think about 1 thing has happened in your classroom this week and you’re really proud of it • In pairs, share your proud moment of the week • 3 people should be prepared to share with the group
Desired Outcomes At the end of this meeting, we will have: • An understanding of the process and expectations for the N.C. Teacher Evaluation Process • An understanding of the 1st quarter Professional Development series for Ranson IB • Vote for a TAC representative and FAC representatives
Why Evaluate? Learning & Development Quality Assurance Legal Requirements
The NC Teacher Evaluation Process will: • Serve as a measurement of performance for individual teachers • Serve as a guide for teachers as they reflect upon and improve their effectiveness • Focus the goals and objectives of schools and districts as they support, monitor, and evaluate their teachers • Guide professional development programs for teachers • Inform higher education programs as they develop the content requirements for higher education programs • Serve as a tool in developing coaching and mentoring programs for teachers
What are we evaluating?NC Standards for Teachers • Standard 1: Teachers demonstrate leadership • Standard 2: Teachers establish a respectful environment for a diverse population of students • Standard 3: Teachers know the content they teach • Standard 4: Teachers facilitate learning for their students • Standard 5: Teachers reflect on their practice • Standard 6: Teachers contribute to the academic success of students • NO teacher will be evaluated on the sixth standard until he/she has three years of valid student achievement data.

Step 1: Training and Orientation • Training • A full training on standards and components of the process (Beginning and New Teachers to the district take district on-line course) • Title of MyPD Course- ONL PDV 2011-2012 North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process Training Online Module (Search by “Contact/Facilitator”- Belfield) • Orientation • Yearly
Step 2: Teacher Self-Assessment • Uses the rubric • Is done by individual (without input from others) • Used to develop PDP • Used in pre and post conferences • Is not collected by principal or evaluator , but is reviewed by the principal and evaluator • Be sure to place a check in the box for: • “I have completed my self assessment and the observer can view my self assessment”
Step 2: Professional Development Plans • All BTSP (year 1-3) will identify their mentor on the PDP • Choose goals that are aligned to a specific Standard and Element • For example: Standard I- Element A- Teachers lead in their classrooms • Developed from your self-assessment • Individual, unless determined otherwise • After completing Year 1 of implementation, the level of PDP is determined for a teacher:
Step 2: Pre-Observation Conference • Occurs before the first observations of the year • Discuss the self-assessment, PDP & lesson(s) to be observed • Teacher will bring the following to the Pre-Observation Conference • Self-Assessment ready in McRel • PDP ready in McRel • Written lesson plan available for evaluator to review • Evaluator will schedule the Pre-Observation Conference and Observation date • **Subsequent observations do not require a pre-observation conference
Step 3: Observations • Probationary teachers (w/o Career Status): • 4 formal observations: 3 administrative, 1 peer • Career Status teachers: • 3 observations: at least 1 must be formal (renewal year) • 2 observations (non-renewal year) NOTE: • Any observation may be announced or unannounced • Evaluator uses the rubric as a recording tool + script tape. • Artifacts may be necessary when a discrepancy occurs • Formal = 45 or 1 complete lesson • Informal= 20 minutes
Step 3: Post-Observation Conferences • Must occur after each formal observation • Must occur no later than 10 school days after the observation • Designed for the purpose of identifying areas of strength and those in need of improvement • Requires review and signature of rubric • Teacher Portfolio should be ready at any time during this process for review
Step 4: Summary Evaluation Conference • Examine growth throughout the year • Review observations and any additional artifacts • Review PDP • Sign Summary Rating sheet & Record of Teacher Evaluation Activities
Next Steps • Find your McRel username and default password on the Intranet • Complete your self-assessment by 9/30 • Review / Develop your professional growth plan level • Work with your assigned first round evaluator to schedule your pre-observation conference. • Use individual planning period for pre-observation conferences
