Achievements 2002/2003 • Expansion of national park system • Purchases through Govt funding, Park Development fund,, National Parks Trust, and NGO donations & sponsorships • Addo, Marakele, Agulhas, Cape Peninsula (add 40,000ha @R26,4m) • Financial position strengthened • Increased rev generation & increased Govt Contribution & roads Subsidy = positive bottom line • Product diversification-4x4 trails, day walks, bush braais, tented camps, bush camps, multi-tiered accommodation at Addo. • Private & Public sector partnerships • Lodges and private camps • Shops, Restaurants & Services • Outsourcing of KNP Vehicle Fleet • Transfrontier Parks • GLTP, Limpopo Shashe TP (land consolidation) Ai-Ais Richtersveld (work in progress) • McKinsey & Co/SANParks Workshop recommendations: Restructuring • Good progress on transformation • Business partnership with San (Kgalagadi) • Approval of differential tariffs and ‘per diem’rates
Goals • Expand National Park system • Targets: • Complete biome protection • State forest acquisition • Pondoland, Qwa Qwa, Blyde River • Agulhas • Graaff Reinet • Grassland Park (Potchefstroom)
2. Improving SANParks financial position • Effective tourism management: • Pricing, loyalty card, yield management, service delivery • Develop vigorous marketing strategy • Management of PPPs • Lodges, private camps • Shops, restaurants, services
Conservation Constituency Building programme • Creating awareness about nature & conservation • Long-term, multi-stakeholder effort. Private sector involvement/sponsorship of youth visits to parks for environmental experience. • Spearheaded by SANParks through Director Conservation Constituency Building • Improve profile of black park visitors *School childrens’ programme eg Morula Kids, Imbewu *Advocating curriculum changes to include nature education. *Neighbouring community visitor programme *LSM 6 - 8 sponsored visits

Transfrontier Conservation – Pursue programmes under aegis of Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. • Kgalagadi Transfontier Park - consolidation • Great Limpopo TP - consolidation • Ai/Ais Richtersveld TP– awaiting proclamation • Limpopo Shashe TP - to be finalised • Maluti Drakensberg – continued SANParks indirect involvement • 5. Develop best practice in biodiversity management
