Purpose • To inform the reader about something important. • The look at a certain area/topic in depth.
What are Some Possible Topics • Person of interest (Athlete, Politician, Citizen, Celebrity…) • Event (Disaster, Game, Court Decision…) • Ideas (Inventions, Education, Politics)
Where do I look for a topic? • -Newspaper • -Internet News (ABC, NBC, CNN…)
What do I do once I have my topic? • Find some background information on it. • Look on the Internet, News, Newspaper, Dictionary… • Create or find a drawing, diagram, or picture that goes with your topic.
What do I do with the information? • -Write it down! • -Organize the three or more subtopics(helps later on with the essay structure). • -Create a multiple-paragraph essay that tells the reader about your topic. • -Tell the reader why it’s important to know about your topic. • -Five-paragraph format is one option. • -Use the rubric to guide your writing.
How Do I Cite My Sources? • Review the handout titled “Get to the Sources!”
Now that you have the “what to do’s”, here is a quick list of “what not to do”. • Don’t forget to cite all sources (newspaper, URL (internet sites), pictures, diagrams…) • Don’t add your opinion on everything, this is not a persuasive essay. • Use more than one source! • Stay away from just making a list of facts…instead build on a few.
