  1. “Go and Sin No More” John 8:1-11

  2. The Woman Caught in Adultery • The Jews were not interested in upholding the Law (v. 5; Lev. 20:10; Deut. 22:22) • The Jews sought an occasion to test Jesus (v. 6; Mt. 16:1; 19:3; 22:18,35) • The Jews acted hypocritically (v. 7; Mt. 23:13ff) • Jesus was interested in upholding the Law (Mt. 5:17; Deut. 17:7) and saving her life (Jn. 3:17)

  3. The Woman Caught in Adultery • Jesus was interested in upholding the Law (Mt. 5:17; Deut. 17:7) and saving her life (Jn. 3:17) • Jesus did not remove the death penalty • Jesus did not overlook sin

  4. The Woman Caught in Adultery • Jesus… • did not “condemn” her to be sentenced (Mk. 14:64) • was not her civil judge (Lk. 12:14) • had no authority to carry out the sentence (Jn. 18:31) • knew the adulterous man was absent (Deut. 22:22) • knew he was not a witness and they were malicious (Deut. 17:7; 19:16-19,21) • acknowledged her sin (v. 11)!

  5. “Go and Sin No More” • Jesus commands us to choose NOT to sin (8:11) • Men “choose” to sin (James 1:13-15)

  6. James 1:13-15 “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”

  7. “Go and Sin No More” • Jesus commands us to choose NOT to sin (8:11) • Men “choose” to sin (James 1:13-15) • We must instead put sin to death in our lives (Colossians 3:5-9)

  8. Colossians 3:5-9 “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. 8But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds”

  9. “Go and Sin No More” • Jesus commands us to choose NOT to sin (8:11) • Men “choose” to sin (James 1:13-15) • We must instead put sin to death in our lives (Colossians 3:5-9) • We must put on the “new man” (Colossians 3:10)

  10. Colossians 3:9-11 “Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. ”

  11. “Go and Sin No More” • Go and Repent (the nature and effect of repentance) • Godly sorrow produces genuine repentance (2 Corinthians 7:9-10)

  12. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 “Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”

  13. “Go and Sin No More” • Go and Repent (the nature and effect of repentance) • Godly sorrow produces genuine repentance (2 Corinthians 7:9-10) • Repentance is a change of mind which causes us to live differently (“go and sin no more;” see Jn. 5:14)

  14. “Go and Sin No More” • Go and live for God • Ultimately, we all live for either God or Satan (Matthew 6:24; Matthew 12:30)

  15. Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (12:30), “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.”

  16. “Go and Sin No More” • Go and live for God • Ultimately, we all live for either God or Satan (Matthew 6:24; Matthew 12:30) • What will your choice be? (Joshua 24:15)

  17. Joshua 24:15 “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

  18. “Go and Sin No More” • How do you approach sin? • with hypocrisy, like the Jews (Mt. 7:1-5) • with humility, like the woman (Lk. 15:17-19) • with humanity, like Jesus (Ezek. 34:4,16; Mt. 18:15; Gal. 6:1-2; Jas. 5:19-20; Jude 22-23)
