Vocabulary • Reconstruction – the post-Civil War period from 1865 to 1877; the U.S. re-admitted the southern states to the Union and the federal government implemented policies affecting southern states. • Black Codes - laws passed in southern U.S. states after Reconstruction to deny African Americans' civil rights

  4. Reconstruction • The process of reuniting the nation and rebuilding the southern states • Reconstruction lasted for 12 years from 1865 to 1877

Juneteenth • January 1863 • Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves in the Confederacy (South) • June 19, 1865 • Emancipation Day in Texas • Gordon Granger, a Union Major-General came to Galveston and issued the Emancipation Proclamation • Freed Texas slaves
