  2. Aims: • Enable anyone to find out more about the bats in their local area • Contribute to recording of bats in the North Pennines AONB

  3. How will it work: • Three lending centres across the AONB • Anyone can book the loan of an EM3 then borrow the bat detector for a week • Walk transects around home or anywhere interested in • Return bat detector and post off memory card • Receive a map with your bat records • Bat records added to WildWatch records

Surveying with EM3 • Initial focus on distribution of foraging bats • Walk at gentle pace along footpaths around home or anywhere interested in • Reduced bat activity during cold, wet and windy nights • Emergence times vary for different species (most sp. >30mins after sunset) • Targeted recording of species/sites depending on early results/participants interests • Participants responsible for own health and safety

  7. How to use the EM3 • Plug in GPS • Check memory card • Turn on (button 1) • Start recording (button 2) • Walk Transect • Press stop (button 3) • Turn off (button 1) • Swap memory card

  9. Visual and Audio Settings • If EM3 shows ‘recording’ then irrespective of what you can see and hear it’ll be recording • But sonograms give a good idea of bats encountered Audio Settings What you want to see Press MODE briefly Press and hold MODE

  10. Visual and Audio Settings Press the X/Y button briefly Then use the up/down arrows to change range shown and the Left/right arrow to change the scale Use the up/down arrows above and below the X/Y button
