Five months with the Devils IdentifyingContent Polluters in Social Streams Radu Popescu
Why did I choose this project? • The Intelligent Web course was my favourite course in both content and assignment tasks • I am really excited about Social Networks and would like to help improve their use • I have strong coding skills especially in the Web Technologies languages
Background literature • Kyumin Lee, Brian David Eoff, James Caverlee. 2011 Seven Months with the Devils: A Long-Term Study of Content Polluters on Twitter • Benevenuto, F.; Magno, G.; Rodrigues, T.; and Almeida, V. 2010. Detecting spammers on Twitter. • Lee, K.; Caverlee, J.; and Webb, S. 2010. Uncovering Social Spammers: Social Honeypots + Machine Learning
The research question • How would you go about identifying social media content that is harmful to the pervasiveness of important topics? • How could you prevent identified problem users from further polluting the social streams? • How can it be implemented in an ethical way and adaptable to various type of polluters (i.e. trolls, spammers)
How would you solve it • Identify Content polluters in Social Streams, mainly Twitter • Use techniques such as setting up honey pots or analysing user behaviour. • Create a database of identified potential polluters profiles • Follow them for a period of time observing their behaviour and collecting further information • Attempt to discourage polluting behaviour
Your ideal team • Interest in Web Technologies and eager user of Social Networks • Good Writing skills • Good Coding skills
