Czech Christmas • For many, December 24 (Štědrý den) is the most enjoyable day of Christmas holidays. Its Czech name literally means "Generous Day", probably for the wealth of food that has traditionally been served for Christmas dinner. • December 24 is Adam and Eva's name day. The Christmas tree is decorated with traditional Czech Christmas ornaments or modern Christms decoration. Christmas Eve is associated with many superstitions that usually relate to life, love, and destiny that awaits one in the year to come. According to one Czech Christmas custom, one is supposed to fast all day to see the "golden piglet" (zlaté prasátko) in the evening. Obr. č. 2 Obr. č. 3
Czech Christmas • Dinner is served after sunset and consists of carp and potato salad, sometimes preceded by mushroom, sauerkraut or fish soup. • Christmas carp is specially raised in manmade ponds and then sold from large tubs placed on the streets and town squares a few days before Christmas. Some families keep their carp in the bathtub for several days as a temporary pet for their children... Obr. č. 4 Obr. č. 5
Czech Christmas • A traditional Christmas bread called vánočkaused to be a part of the Christmas dinner in the past but today it has largely lost its Christmas connotation and is available year-round. Obr. č. 6 • After dinner, everyone around the table may sing Christmas carols before moving to the Christmas tree, which is all lit up and beautiful. By then, presents have been placed under the tree. Czech children believe that Christmas gifts are brought by Baby Jesus (Ježíšek) who comes into the room through the window to leave the presents.Just like Santa though, he receives wish-list letters from Czech children a few weeks before Christmas.
Czech Christmas • Czech Republic Christmas stretches over December 25 and 26, which are also referred to as the First and SecondChristmas Holidays, or the Christmas Feast (Boží hod vánoční) and St. Stephen's Day (Sv. Štěpán). Nowadays, families stay at home and relax or visit relatives and friends to share the special time. • Midnight MassSome people end Christmas Eve by attending the midnight mass (půlnoční mše) at a local church. It usually starts at midnight but some churches hold it earlier, such as at 10 p.m. There can also be a Christmas Mass for children in the afternoon.
English Christmas Obr. č. 7
English Christmas • Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December in England, with a Christmas dinner for the whole family on the Christmas eve or Christmas day. The night of the 24th is just a quiet time which is usually spent with the family and very close friends, talking and drinking mulled wine and eating far too many sweets. The most important day is the 25th. This is when it gets to the fun part - opening presents! Unfortunately we don't get to see Santa Claus (we prefer calling him Father Christmas), because he comes when everyone's asleep. But in return for his generosity, some people leave out some biscuits and milk, or something stronger to keep the merry rosy-cheeked chap nice and warm on his travels around the world. Obr. č. 8 Obr. č. 9
Obr. č. 10 A typical Christmas dinner is dominated by the huge turkey. The turkey is roasted and served with a lot of vegetables, like potatoes, turnips, cauliflower and broccoli, with the choice of gravy, or mint or cranberry sauce. It takes a lot of hours to prepare all of this, and even longer to eat it. Obr. č. 11
Obr. č. 12 Obr. č. 13 The dessert is, of course, the Christmas pudding. It is a sweet that has no expiry date, and becomes better with age, like cheese. You eat it hot, with a lot of sweet sauce - custard. Christmas dinners in England HAVE to come with Christmas crackers - they are tubes of cardboard that look like sweets. Inside there is a crown-shaped hat, a little souvenir, and a silly joke. To open them you need to pull the two ends apart and that's when they should open with a little bang!
Obr. č. 14 After Christmas day comes Boxing Day. Boxing day comes from the word "box". In the old days, people went around to other people's houses on the day after Christmas day, asking for leftover food, or money etc.During the weeks before Christmas Day, people send cards, watch nativity plays and go to carol services. They also decorate their homes and churches with green leaves, paper decorations and colourful electric lights. It is traditional to send a lot of cards to all your possible friends, family, colleagues and even people you don't really know very well. Nativity plays are another big thing. They are performances, usually by infant school kids, portraying the life of Jesus.
Christmas in the United States of America Obr. č. 15
Christmas in the USA • In the United States, Christmas is observed on the 25th of December. • Christmas Eve is not an official holiday here. Hence most people have to work. For kids, it is a day of great joy since most schools and other educational establishments are usually closed. In the evening, most people add final touches to their home decorations. Many also set up the Christmas tree in their homes on this day. • Many organizations and department stores are usually open for last minute Christmas shoppers, but may close earlier. Many people travel to visit family members or friends on Christmas Eve. Some people, especially Roman Catholics, attend a Midnight Mass service at church and participate in singing carols. Obr. č. 16
Obr. č. 17 The Christmas dinner in the U.S. includes turkey or ham, potatoes and pie. At Christmas Eve gatherings adults drink eggnog, a drink made of cream, milk, sugar, beaten eggs and brandy or rum. After dinner on Christmas Eve, children go to bed early but not before hanging up their stockings on the fireplace or the end of their bed to be filled with gifts and goodies by Santa Claus. On the following morning, children wake up to look for their desired items in their stockings and also find nicely wrapped presents under their Christmas tree. Obr. č. 18
