Where does OUR money go? Improving the Public’s Perception of Federal Government Spending Erin Simpler’s Midterm Presentation to Gov 3.0 class
What’s the Problem? • Decline in public opinion • Anger and frustration with the federal government • Debate around the deficit and levels of federal spending
My Hypothesis • If citizens better understood where their tax money went and the impact it was having, they would feel less frustration with the government
The Current Environment • Federal government releases spending data, and there is movement to increase the depth of spending data released • Federal government also releases data around performance and goals – performance.gov • Recovery Act is an example of increased transparency around federal spending
My project • Many tools like Usaspending.gov and Federalspending.org have the goal of releasing federal spending data to increase transparency and reduce government waste • Can spending data be formatted/presented in such a way to improve public’s perception of the federal government?
Feedback?/Questions for the Group • Is frustration with government enough of a burning platform to make you care about this issue? Do I need more about WHY frustration/anger with the federal government is a bad thing or why improving public opinion about federal government is a good thing?
