War in EuropePrelude to WWI • Two Main Defense Alliances: • Good Example—Two main “Teams” • “Triple Entente” or Allies: • France • Great Britain • Russia • America not involved yet!
Defense Alliances • Triple Alliance—Central Powers: • Germany • Austria Hungary • Italy
“Central Powers” • Those Three Powers combined forces with: • Middle East countries known as the” • “Ottoman Empire” • This is broken up after WWI to what we know it as today.
Teams are set: • Triple Entente or Allies vs. Triple Alliance or Central Powers. • Where is America at this time?
America Forced Into War:A long process, but what causes it? • Four Main Terms to Know: • Nationalism: A devotion to one’s own nation. We had many immigrants in America asking America to help out their foreign land. Smaller countries needing the help of larger powers.
Term #2 • Imperialism: When more powerful countries have economic and/or political control over other nations. Like Russia when they became the “USSR”, or less threatening, America’s influence over neighboring countries like Puerto Rico.
Term #3 • Militarism: The growth and development of a standing Army. The threat of war gave opportunity for smaller nations to grow their military budgets claiming the threat of war was causing this. Received help from larger nations—the reason: Peace!
Term #4 • Allies: “Entangling” alliances drew neighbors into the conflict. Each side having friends they could force involvement on. This is how a border conflict turned into a national struggle, and eventually a World War.
