Welcome! Some important (friendly) people to get to know … “ We’re here to help ! ”
Opening Remarks • Congratulations! • Welcome • Career training vsgetting an education: (1) Some myths about (un)employment (2) Some surprising advice: don’t worry about specific career choices now! Our focus: a broad liberal arts education that will equip you for many careers, including some that haven’t even been invented yet!
Famous Philosophy Graduates • Bill Clinton • Harrison Ford • Ricky Gervais • Paul Martin • Steve Martin • Beverley McLachlin • Pope John Paul II • Joan Rivers • George Soros • Peter Thiel • Alex Trebeck • Moses Znaimer
1st & 2nd SEMESTER • REQUIRED: • SSH 105 Critical Thinking I • SSH 205 Academic Writing and Research • REQUIRED GROUP 1: Two courses from the following: • PHL 101 Plato and the Roots of Western Philosophy • PHL 201 Problems in Philosophy • PHL 333 Philosophy of Human Nature • PHL 366 Existentialism and Art and Culture • REQUIRED GROUP 2: Four courses from Table I • PROFESSIONALLY RELATED: One course from Table I or III • PROFESSIONALLY RELATED: One course from Table III
For Critical Thinking – SSH 105 Facilitator-led– structured sessions – held weekly Integrate “what to know” with “how to know” + Develop transferable skills = Achieve HIGHER GPA!
Table I • By the time you graduate, you must complete 12-16 courses from Table I. Table II and Minors • By the time you graduate, you must complete 7-11 courses from Table II. • you can choose to complete one or two minors by taking 6 courses (per minor) in one of these areas: Information Systems; Law; Human Resources Management; Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Management; Marketing; Sociology; Psychology; Criminal Justice; Politics and Governance; English; History; News Studies; Professional Communication; Chemistry; etc. • It’s up to you to complete all the requirements for options and minors. If you do, they will appear on your transcript.
School / Work / Life Balance • You’re “only” in 15 hours of class per week. • A good rule of thumb: for every hour you’re in class, you should be devoting another hour to preparing for that class, doing assignments for that class, etc. • So, 15 hour in class + 15 hours of study = 30 hours a week. • Another good rule of thumb: don’t take a job that demands more than 10-15 hours a week. (30 + 15 = 45). PS: On-campus jobs are great! www.ryerson.ca/career/jobsearch/searchjob/oncampusjobs/
Student Life: Beyond the Books Lots of opportunities to get involved! You’re Automatically Part of Two Communities: • Ryerson-Wide Student Clubs and Groups • Faculty of Arts Student Life And There’s So Much More, Such As … • Residence Life • Sports and Recreation • International Opportunities • Bottom line: “The more you put into university life, the more you get out of it!”
