Evaluation of PH-ELIM trainings IV. Coordination meeting September 4, 2017, Debrecen Project web site: www.ph-elim.net
Goals of this presentation to define self-regulation in order to test self-reflection for the training activities that will take place in PH-ELIM, starting in September 2017 with the training in Debrecen. if the first test during the training in Debrecen is successful, it is planned to use this approach for all trainings. Project web site: www.ph-elim.net
Concept of self-regulation Self-regulation is based on the key assumption that people desire to control the events that affect their lives (Schunk, 2012). Self-regulation encompasses three phases: forethought, performance control, and self-reflection (Schunk, 2012).
Forethought At the beginning of the first day of the training, participants are asked to describe their previous experiences with the training topic, their motivation to participate, and their personal learning goals. Students could be asked to write down these points on a piece of paper. The paper stays with them – they need this information for the final reflection. 5 – 10 Minutes should be sufficient for this.
Performance control At the end of each training day, the participants are asked to shortly reflect on their personal progress in reaching their personal learning objectives. They are asked to compare what they learned to the objectives they have documented on the very first day. This can be done in a short oral discussion round between all participants.
Self-Reflection Within two weeks after the training, participants are asked to deliver a written self-reflection (of 2 – 3 pages) describing their personal learning objectives, learning process and learning outcomes they made in the course as well as the transfer of the new knowledge to their professional life. The instructions for this self-reflection of described in the next section. This written self-reflection is the precondition for obtaining the course certificate and is thus part of the overall assessment (however, we will not grade this self-reflection).
Participants - after the training The following instruction should be given for the participants of the trainings after the training: You have participated in the training course on public health law. To conclude this training and to gain a course certificate, it is mandatory that you deliver a written self-reflection. Self-reflections after the deadline (e.g. by e-mail) will be collected and sent to elske.ammenwerth@umit.at
Questions on self-reflection Which knowledge did you already have on the training topic before the training? Which was your motivation to participate in the training and what were your personal learning objectives? How was your learning process during the training? Where did you have difficulties, and why? Could you connect the training to knowledge you already had before the training? How did you make progress towards your personal learning objectives during the training? Did you reach your learning objectives at the end? If not, why not? How do you want to apply what you have learned to your professional context? Can you make use of the new knowledge that you have obtained? Do you plan to pursue further trainings in this area?
Participants - after the training Short skype (or phone) interviews with all participants will be conducted to give feedback on their reflection (this is important to motivate them for future self-reflections), and then to discuss how they perceived the self-reflection.
Interview guide questions Content of their reflection (short feedback on their reflection, just to be polite, they handed it in and will expect a feedback) How did you perceive the need to define your personal learning goals at the beginning of the training? How did you perceive the need to do daily performance assessments in the group? How did you perceive the need to do a final, written reflection (clear instruction? Difficult? Helpful? Ways to improve it?)
Future possibilities Afterwards, we (UMIT/Debrecen) should decide whether it worked well and whether it should be used for further training After the training courses, a publication entitled “Acceptance of integrating self-reflection activities into international training courses on public health – concept and evaluation”
