  1. Cardiovascular & CirculatorySystems

  2. If we looked at all the blood vessels in your body, what would the total length be? Around the world twice! How many times will your heart beat in a lifetime? 3 billion!! Fun Facts!!!

  3. 4 8 To lungs to get O2 4 1 5 5 6 2 7 1 3 8

  4. 1. Function of CV system Provides nutrients and oxygen through blood Carries away waste (CO2) Helps fight disease

  5. Cardiovascular & Circulatory System • Three Parts: • Heart • Blood Vessels • Blood

  6. Structures - Heart • Shape- Strawberry • Size-Fist • Weight- 1 pound • Location- Center of the chest

  7. THE HEART

  8. Heart - Structures • 1. Septum– Divides the Heart into Right and Left • 2. Chambers • Atrium – Top (smaller) • Ventricle- Bottom (bigger) • 3 Valves- keep blood flowing in one direction

  9. RT Side- Without 0xygen LT Side- With Oxygen

  10. Blood Vessels • 1. Arteries (RED) -Carries Blood Away from the Heart • 2. Veins (BLUE)- Carry Blood Back to the Heart • 3. Capillaries -Where exchange of nutrients takes place (O2, Waste, Etc…)

  11. Blood Vessels • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjNKbL_-cwA • Circulation- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgI80Ue-AMo&feature=related • Capillaries- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q530H1WxtOw

  12. Blood Pressure Definition: The Force of the Blood against the Walls of the Arteries Systole: Top Number of Blood Pressure (ventricles contracting) Diastole: Bottom Number of Blood Pressure (ventricles filled w/ blood and relaxed) 120/80

  13. Blood - Function • Carries food and oxygen to all cells • Rid the body of waste

  14. Blood Components 1. Red Blood Cells 2. White Blood Cells 3. Platelets 4. Plasma

  15. Red Blood Cells • Made in the Marrow of Bones • Carry Oxygen • Hemoglobin • The Protein that attracts O2 to the RBC • Prone to Defect/illnesses

  16. White Blood Cells • 1.Made in the Marrow of Bones • 2. Defend the Body against Disease • 3. Called Leukocytes

  17. Plasma • The Liquid part of Blood (55% of blood) • Mostly Water

  18. Blood Components

  19. Platelets • 1. Aid in the clotting of blood • 2. How does it do this? • Cut occurs. Platelets Activated • Platelets RUSH to the wound • Fibrin is released (Spider Web) • Web is formed over Wound • Trapped Cells Harden and form a Scab

  20. PLATELETS = SPIDERMAN

  21. Cut occurs…. Platelets Actived! PLATELETS- STEP 1

  22. Platelets RUSH to the wound! PLATELETS – STEP 2

  23. Fibrin is released (Spidey Web) PLATELETS- STEP 3

  24. Web is formed over Wound. PLATELETS – STEP 4

  25. -Trapped Cells Harden and form a Scab PLATELETS – STEP 5 SPIDEY SAVES THE DAY 

  26. Blood Types • A, B, AB, O • Donor-Person who gives blood • Recipient- Person who receives blood • Clumping-Occurs when the blood types do not mix

  27. Blood Types A, B, AB, O Recipient D o n o r *O = Universal Donor *AB =Universal Recipient

  28. SO how does blood move through the heart and body???

  29. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH0QTWzU-xI Lets see how the heart works

  30. Circulation Pulmonary- blood with little oxygen is pumped from rt side of heart to lungsSystemic- blood rich with oxygen is from lt side of heart to cells of the bodymyocardium- special type of muscle that helps heart contract rhythmically

  31. Superior Vena Cava Aorta Pulmonary Artery Pulmonary Vein RT Atrium LT Atrium Tricuspid Valve LT Ventricle Bicuspid Valve RT Ventricle Inferior Vena Cava Septum

  32. 1. Blood enters through superior and inferior vena cava

  33. 2. The blood enters the right atrium

  34. 4. Blood spills into right ventricle 3. Blood passes through Tricuspid Valve

  35. 5. Blood enters the pulmonary arteries.

  36. 6. From here, blood goes to your lungs to pick up O2

  37. 7. Oxygen rich blood returns to your heart through pulmonary veins

  38. 8. Blood enters left atrium.

  39. 10. Blood enters the left ventricle 9. Blood passes through Bicuspid Valve

  40. 11. Blood is pumped through the aorta and delivered to rest of body.

  41. Pathway of Blood Through the Heart • Any questions? • Lets watch it again… • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA0Wb3gc4mE
