How to find the world and how to be specific Text-to-World Connecting
What is TTW again? • Connections that a reader makes between a story they are reading and the real world. How does this story relate to real life or the real world? • Remember those lovely question starters on your handout? Let’s look at them again!
But what if I live in a box? • One problem with TTW connecting is knowing what’s going on in the world. • Believe it or not, though, you know the world without reading or watching a lot of news. • Unless you live in a box, you get info about the world from: • TV • Movies • Video games • Ads/Commercials • Songs • Radio • Internet • And so much more!
How do I get the world from… • TV and Movies • The images you see show you what is “normal” • The topics that are presented give you a picture of what people care about • Video games • Graphics are more than just good, they are real life! Think of the scenery in non-fantasy games. This is what the outside world looks like if you haven’t actually seen it • Advertisements/Commercials • The topics and repeated images show us what Americans value
How do I get the world from… • Songs and Radio • A lot of songs are about real events and stories • Most songs, when you look at it, start to talk about the same things so that shows us what continues to go on in the real world • Internet • Where do I start? From pop-ups trying to get you to buy stuff to news articles actually telling you the days events. This media really opens the door. • Why do you think it’s called the “WORLD” wide web?
Being too vague with your TTW • Another problem with TTW connecting is being too vague or non-specific with your connections • This means you just state a one sentence connection without explanation • Example: In my text Morrie is sick and people in the world get sick all the time.
How to avoid being vague • Use MULTIPLE sentences • Actually discuss how the event/idea in your book reflects the event/idea you’ve seen in the world • Dig deep into the story and your world • Remember not to be superficial • Remember to look beyond the obvious
Some BAD examples • Too vague: • In my text Morrie is sick and people in the world get sick all the time. • How can we fix it? • Revised text-to-world connection:
