  3. As you read the introduction, think about what a “commons” is. Can you think of any examples of commons in your community?

  4. Challenge • How can the overuse of an ecosystem service be prevented? • Another way to think of this question is: How can people prevent the overuse of resources we use and rely on?

  5. What do you think of when you hear the term “model”? • How might scientists use models in their research?

  6. For each part of this Activity you will model different fishing limits to try to determine what limit is sustainable.

  7. Analysis 6 • How does this game model the idea of the Tragedy of the Commons?

  8. Analysis 11 • Think about the community you live in. • What are some commons there? • Imagine you are asked to be in charge of a committee that manages your community’s commons. What management plan would you suggest to the committee? What indicators would you use to measure how well you were managing the commons? What evidence would you look for to show that you were successful? What trade-offs would you have to make to accomplish this?
