Access to Medicines Innovative medicines are an essential element of NHS care and can revolutionise treatment options for patients, thus helping improve the health of the nation. Medicines account for one eighth of NHS expenditure and can improve well-being, improve quality of life and in many instances save lives. Critical to the appropriate use of medicines is correct early diagnosis, the choice of appropriate treatment options and the involvement of the patient – or in some cases their carer – in the use of the medicine. Recently, affordability has been highlighted in isolation from other key factors when choices about treatment are made, with wide variations in the provision of treatments across the country and in different socio-economic groups. However, it is not purely an issue of the availability of medicines. Once treatment commences, there is the additional issue of compliance with treatment. It is widely recognised that many patients - up to 50% - with chronic conditions stop taking their medicines within one year, despite medical advice to the contrary. Pfizer is dedicated to the discovery and development of innovative medicines that add value to healthcare and the NHS, as well as improving patient care – in other words, medicines that do their job better than other medicines or approaches currently available. Access to appropriate medicines should be on the basis of individual clinical need, whilst appropriate services and processes should be developed locally to ensure access to services is of a high quality and consistent standard - based upon national standards, guidance and monitoring, thus reducing inequity in the provision of care while improving the outcomes for those in greatest need. Improving the formal involvement of nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals in the use of medicines enables professional skills to be applied more effectively to improve patient care and patient outcomes.
