CHILDHOOD SEASONAL FLU VACCINATION PROGRAMME  Flu can be a very unpleasant illness in children causing fever, stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, aching muscles and joints, and extreme tiredness, often lasting for several days.  Why should my child have the flu vaccine?The vaccine is given as a nasal spray and is easy to give and painless.The vaccine contains weakened flu viruses to prevent them from causing flu, but allows your child to build up immunity, so if they come into contact with someone with flu they are unlikely to get ill.Flu can be a nasty illness that can lead to a stay in hospital, especially for children with other medical conditions.If your child gets flu they won’t be able to go to school/nursery for several days and will need to be cared for at home, meaning you may need to take time off work.Protecting your child can stop the flu spreading to others, in particular to grandparents, who may be particularly at risk to flu. This year, the Surgery is offering vaccinations to ALL patients aged 2, 3 or 4 years. 4. The PPGThe PPG Group have a leaflet available that explains what we do and how you can help and join us should you wish to do so.These leaflets are available at both surgeries and also pinned to the PPG notice boards.Please do take time to read one and if you would like more details make contact via the surgery The next PPG dates, all at Wilson Street Surgery and starting at 6.30 pm are:Wednesday 17th SeptemberWednesday 21st January 2015We hope you may be able to join us at one of these meetings.

5. PPG Book SaleThe PPG will be holding book sales at both Wilson Street and Taddington Road Surgeries on an ad-hoc basis.We hope to co-ordinate at least one of these sales during the Flu Clinics at each surgery in OctoberMonies raised will help purchases to benefit the patientsIf you have any books or magazines that are in good condition and would like to donate them to raise funds, please take them to receptionThank you for any contributions you may make and please consider helping us to raise some money for your surgery.After the sales any unsold magazines will be left in the surgeries waiting rooms for patients to read

6. Healthwatch Derby The following items are taken from the Healthwatch Derby Spring/Summer 2014 Newsletter Healthwatch Derby wants you to be the eyes and ears of health and social care services in Derby.  Please contact us (details as below) if you have anything you would like to say - whether it is positive, negative, an experience, opinion or view.  We can signpost you to other organisations if necessary and we will pass your comments to the service providers and commissioners to make sure that your voice counts. There are a few different ways to get involved and volunteer with Healthwatch Derby, therefore becoming a Healthwatch Champion.  As well as becoming a Mystery Shopper you could visit health and social care establishments, help us to promote Healthwatch Derby at events; collect people's views and experiences of Derby's health and social care services; help with admin tasks or act as a representative at meetings and forums.  Healthwatch Derby can be contacted by telephone on 01332 643988 or via their website www.healthwatchderby.co.uk should you require any further information on these articles or a paper copy. / continued …..

7. Your Royal Your Royal was a community listening event which gave local people an opportunity to air their views and experiences to Healthwatch Derby and Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, try the patients' food and ask questions directly to the Trust.  A full report of this project is now available with a response from the Trust. Think Healthy This will be your chance to tell of your experiences and views about mental health services in Derby. Healthwatch Derby is hosting a community listening event with Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Details of this have yet to be confirmed. There will be a range of events including workshops and market stalls over the next few months. The workshops will have services from the Trust in attendance.  

8. Missed AppointmentsIf you allow the surgery permission to have your mobile phone number they can remind you via text, if you wish, of your forthcoming appointment/s.Missed appointments waste the time, resources and finances of the surgery, which can be put to better use. When you make an appointment with a doctor or nurse, you are urged to make sure to be there and on time. If you can’t make the appointment, you should let the surgery know as soon as you can so the time can be released for another patient. If patients do not attend appointments it is frustrating for doctors who lose a 10-minute slot when they could have seen another patient and for nurses – particularly if it’s an asthma or diabetic review – as they could lose 20-30minutes which could have been used for 3 patients in normal clinic slots.The link below is from the Derby Telegraph in May 2014www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/Missed-GP-appointments-Derby-cost-100-000-year/story-21144204-detail/story.htmlThank you

9. Dr Drew Smith It is a pleasure to introduce myself as the new Partner to the practice, taking over from Dr Fyall, whom we all wish a long and happy retirement. Originally from the west of Scotland, I studied and began my medical career in Dundee before relocating to Derbyshire in 2009. I started my GP training at Wilson Street Surgery in 2011 and am delighted to be joining as a Partner. In my spare time, I enjoy keeping fit, art and hill walking  Dr K Burnett (Retired) It is with regret that we announce that Dr Ken Burnett (retired GP Partner) passed away peacefully on 27 June 2014. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
