Definition of the lenses that we used in the power point in relation to Pimp My Ride. • How is class related to the story line of Pimp My Ride? • Do you see more girls or boys in the shop? Do you see any girls in the shop? • What are the classes that you see on Pimp My Ride? • What age groups have you seen on Pimp My Ride? • What kinds of races do you see that are in need to get their ride pimped?
Class • Class plays an important role in Pimp My Ride. • Have you ever seen a rich kid have a car that was needed to be pimped. • If so was he/she more or less surprised than the less fortunate people. • Think of the comparison between rich and less fortunate people that get there rides pimped.
Gender • Gender is a major factor in the MTV show Pimp My Ride • Gender is a factor in the type of car that they have to “Pimp” • If it is a girl, they might put a pink carpet and a put a make up set in it • If it’s a boy, they might put flames on it and a video game system in it. • In The Shop, there are also no women improving the cars.
Age Although you may see old people driving cool cars. You never see them driving PIMPED out cars • Age plays a big role in the MTV show Pimp My Ride • Examples: • Older people would not want very colorful cars that stand out on the streets. • Most of the time you do not see old people on the show. • Majority of people who are getting there cars pimped are young adultsfrom 20 to 27.
Race & Ethnicity Question: How are different races treated and portrayed in the show Pimp My Ride? • Example 1: None of the “pimpers” are white: all of them are African American or Latino • Example 2: Not many of the people who had their rides pimped were white. There were two African Americans and one Asian in the three sample episodes we watched. • Example 3: All of the African Americans are wearing hoodies and tank tops
Concluding Points • Race, age, gender and class all played an important role in the show Pimp My Ride • The “pimpers” on Pimp My Ride are portrayed as cool and successful through their age, race, class and gender because their job is one that is portrayed as very desirable • Only the younger people want to have their rides stand out. • There were many races but no whites which is insulting • The contestants all want their cars pimped to show off for girls or at work.
