King Leopold II • King Leopold II ruled the Congo, alone without the Belgian government • Personal concession for Leopold, ruled as dictatorship rather than a colony • Used his rule to augment his personal wealth. • He showed brutality towards the Congolese. • Congolese wives and children had their hands cut off if their husband/father failed to meet rubber-collection quotas. • Under Leopold’s reign nearly 10 million people died
The Belgian Colony • The Belgian government took it back from Leopold in 1908, and ruled it as a colony until 1960. • Missionaries educated the natives - only 500 missionaries • June 30th, 1960 the Congolese declared their independence • The country was very unstable • Eventually Patrice Lumumba became Prime Minister, while Joseph Kasavubu was elected President. • Lumumba was arrested in 1960 and later murdered in 1961 • Today the country is known as the Democratic Republic of The Congo
