Planning • What do I want to do? • What type of companies provide those opportunities? • Where are those types of companies located? • What companies are a good fit with my needs and values? • Does my resume accurately reflect my skills? • What are the various company's hiring practices?
Preparation • Update and have resume critiqued • Verify voicemail is professional • Create list of target companies • Set aside interviewing attire • Select and identify networking events • Create job search spreadsheet • Generate list of applicable job titles • Set agenda for search
Research • Career Library databases • Company web sites • Publications/trade journals • Professional associations • Chambers of commerce • Job posting boards

Networking • What: • Meeting and exchanging information • Why: • Obtain information about careers and industries • Build professional contacts • Who: • Alumni, company representatives • How: • Prepare a target speech (elevator speech, commercial) • Research. Know who will be there, who you want to meet, and research the companies. • Dress professionally. • Bring copies of your resume. • Ask questions and give information. • Collect business cards.
Cold Calling • What: • Calling Prospective Employers • Why: • Contact small companies and identify point of contact • Review application • Verify information for cover letter • Learn of open positions • Tips: • Call early • Ask if it’s a good time • Keep Control – Call back vs. leave message • Have a script
Informational Interviews • What: • Appointment that you schedule with a particular individual in your field of interest • Why: • Gain current, regional, and/or specialized information from an "insider" point of view • Learn about career options, job duties, and develop a network in your field • Who: • Family, friends, alumni, and referrals • Steps: • Researching company and person • Prepare target speech and questions • Dress professionally, update resume • How: • Build Rapport, show interest, don’t ask for a job • Send a thank you note
Applying Online/E-Resumes Emailed Resumes or Upload to Website • Attach document as a Word document named: firstname_lastname.doc • Send an E-Cover Letter in the email text. This should be similar to a regular cover letter, but briefer. • Tell them your resume is attached. • Always view your document. Sometimes formatting changes.
