Introductions • Mrs. Dale - syndicate leader/teacher in 5D and teacher in charge of the Library. • Mrs. Langford - 5E • Mrs. Samuel - 5F • Mrs. Kaur - 5B
CHANGES • In many cases students choose their own home reading material. However, some students will still be given specific home reading. • No spelling diaries, the spelling list will be recorded in the back of the homework book. • Spelling levels are not the same as Year 3, it is an entirely new spelling programme.
Spelling: • New programme with new levels this year. • Students are grouped according to their Schonnel spelling test results . • Re-tested in June and groups readjusted accordingly. Retested again in October • List words for homework are written in the back of homework books. • List words are tested on a Thursday.
HOMEWORK: • Goes home on Friday • Comes back on Thursday • A Homework Guideline Sheet will be pasted into the front of Homework books • Consequences - Friday homework club • A Dragon Maths 2 workbook will also be part of the homework and required pages will be listed in the homework sheet for the week . • Spelling is tested on Thursdays • Importance of having books at school on Thursday.
ASSESSMENT • PAT testing Week 4 • Benchmark Testing-Week 6 Term 2 • Benchmark Testing –Week 3 Term 4 • ASTTLE Testing – provides valuable information about individual students .
Cultural/ Sports Rotation: Mrs. Langford • Mrs. Dale –Drama • Mrs. Kaur- Art • Mrs. Langford-Dance • Mrs. Samuel- Music • 45 minute rotation each week on a Friday
EOTC • Auckland Botanical Gardens : TERM 1 • PACKING A DAY PACK • Problem solving team skills • MAPPING SKILLS • Marae Trip Term 2: • Possible Trip to Kelly Tarlton’s Term 3.
Library: • Book bags must be used to take books home • Students are able to withdraw three books at a time. • Two week borrowing period • Encourage prompt returns and caring for books at home. • Overdue slips are to remind parents to look for the books.
Library Times • Mrs Dale 1.30pm Tuesday • Mrs Langford 9am Wednesday • Mrs Kaur 2pm Tuesday • Mrs Samuel 11am Thursday
Class Wikis • Your child’s class wiki will be active from the beginning of the year • Each student has a wiki page where samples of class work will be shown. • Sometimes these written samples will be works in progress. Please assist your child with any unedited class work from home. • Access to the class wiki is via the school website www.wakaaranga.school.nz
Class Wikis continued • Click on your child’s class name for 2013 • 5D Mrs Dale, 5E Mrs Langford, 5B Mrs Kaur and 5F Mrs Samuel • A homework page will be included on the wiki each week beginning Week 2 Term 1 • There will be a home page outlining any upcoming events or news. • Each class will have their own format for their wikis.

How Can You Help? • Support your child with their homework, encourage him/her to read each night and test spelling each week. Make this a positive experience for your child. • PTA: Each class requires a parent representative to be a liaison person- these people do not necessarily have to attend PTA meetings. You may want to join the PTA, it is a great group to belong to and they are always looking for enthusiastic members!!!
Personal time with teacher • Feel free, if you haven’t already, to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher. • No personal details will be given about individual children at this public forum, but feel free to make an appointment with the class teacher if you need to.
