MU International Programs • High Point Period (1900-1949): • YenChing University established its School of Journalism in 1924. • Exchange programs between MU and Yenching University • Harvard-Yenching Institute was established • From 1909 to 1940, 1971 Chinese students were sent to top-tier universities in the U.S. Introduction (Cont.) Adjustment Period (1950-1978): • “Shanghai Communiqué” was signed. • From 1972 to 1976, around 700 Chinese educators visited the U.S. • In 1973, the first U.S. educator delegation visited China. • In 1974, the U.S. university presidential delegation visited China. • In 1974, the delegation of Chinese educators from higher education visited the U.S. • In 1978, the first group of 50 scholars and professionals were sent to the U.S. to study. New Epoch Period (1979-present): • In 1979, Chinese Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping visited the U.S. • Since 1979, sister universities formed. • From 1983-1984, collaborative relationships were built. • In 1986, Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center was established. MU International Programs • New Epoch Period (1979-present): • From 1981-1991, 600 Chinese K-12 English teachers received training in the U.S. • From 1980 to 1990, 169 American Fulbright scholars came to China. • From 1979 to 2009, 95,000 Chinese students went to the U.S. • Since 1990, more and more American faculty and students came to China. MU International Programs • The mission of the International Programs at MU is to • Develop and support expertise which will be utilized to engage in international economic development, outreach and research. • Sustain a dynamic strategic planning process to insure that internationalization is an explicit and ongoing part of the University's strategic plan and priorities. • Refine and promulgate university policies and procedures relevant for facilitating faculty, student and staff involvement in international activities. • Create synergy between the divergent prongs of international education and engagement: technical assistance, academic offerings, research, study abroad, collaborative research, alumni relations, policy dialogue and instructional linkages. Moore and Wedman-Established a usability testing laboratory at East China Normal University in Shanghai. • Provided training in soybean transformation for Crop Breeding and Genetics, Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences, Beijing, China • Drs Gomez & M. Liu investigated Earthquakes, Geohazards, and Society with 12 MU student participants. • Business School students did internships during summer 2010 in China. MU International Programs • Dr. Lampo Leong organized an exchange art exhibition from China in 2009 and participated in some exhibitions China as well. • Chongqing University of Technology sent English faculty to MU, with a focus of understanding English education and language classes • Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Trade sent students to MU for a 3-week program covering business, trade & cultural events. • Dr.’s Sandvol & Cormier worked with China on partnerships for international research and education.
