What is Grant? • -A financial donation given to support a person, organization, projects, or programs. (Pratt Library) • A certain population • Particular type of nonprofit • Specific type of support
What is Grantwriting? • -The art of securing funding for nonprofits via grant proposals • Funding Institutions: • Foundations • Corporations • Government Agencies
Funding Institutions • Foundations -req. by law to distribute 5% of their assets annually • Private foundations- usually set up by from an individual, family group of individuals, or a business (Marcus Foundation) • Community foundations- publicly supported and operated for the benefit of a given place (Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta) • Corporate-sponsored foundation- maintain close ties with the parent company, and their giving usually reflects company interests (Georgia Pacific Foundation) • Corporate Direct Giving Program -not separate legal entity and isnot subject to laws governing exempt orgs. No endowments. (Charles Schwab) • values, interests, brand awareness, & reputation building • Government Agencies - usually distributed through state and local government units; • Typically for scientific and research purposes; long and tedious

Understanding the Grant-Writing Process
Step 1 The Process • Understand Your Org’s Goals and Objectives • “The 5 Ws” -- The WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, & WHY • Be Knowledgeable of: • · Community’s needs in order to create a solution for the problem. • · Org’s available resourcesin order to request the correct type/amount of help • how to match program and needsto another organization’s priorities and criteria for giving

Step 3 The Process • Form 990s • Tax-exempt orgs are required to file Form W990 with the IRS annually to maintain their tax-exempt status • Annual income and from what sources • Program, management, & fundraising expenses • Net Assets • Grants awarded • Display your ability to match your org’s needs to another organization’s priorities and criteria for awarding grants. Seek trends and draw inferences!
Step 4 The Process • Contact the appropriate grant makers • Via Email or phone • Be aware of: • Grant submission deadlines • Geographic areas of support • Clarify any questions • Do they accept unsolicited proposals? Solicited proposals?
Step 5 The Process • Prepare Appropriate Documents • Letter of Inquiry (LOI) - persuasive letter that presents an identified problem within the community, a proposed solution, and your org’s qualifications for enacting the solution. • Includes: Intro, Org + Program description, Statement of need, Methodology, & Budget • “Buzz Words “- Vocabulary words that depict foundation’s values • Full Proposal - More elaborate form of LOI • Includes: Board of directors, Various IRS forms • Online Application
Step 6 The Process • Follow-up • Rejection– Thank you letters • Reason(s) of the rejection • Acceptance—provide foundation with more information or grant reports after grant has been awarded • *Regardless of rejection of acceptance, it is crucial to build and maintain relationships with all the for the future.
