1. It’s a big world out there. How do Delaware providers Take Good Care? Paula Savini, Kathy Corbitt, and Romie Lutz
July 19, 2006 UQIOSC presentation
2. Taking Good Care Quality Insights of Delaware is the “Take Good Care” organization to providers and beneficiaries.
Our challenge to providers:
How do you Take Good Care of your increasingly diverse population base?
3. Our world - Delaware Small state
Small pool of eligible physicians (500)
1d2 responsibility assigned to Communications
Small staff – less than 1 FTE assigned to task
4. Six degrees of separation In Delaware, make that three – one or two if you’re related!
Getting to providers meant getting to those they work with and trust.
5. Our approach Health literacy had already been a rallying point for Quality Insights
Health literacy + cultural competency = Person Centered Care Initiative
6. Make new friends… Hospital groups – via their Family Medicine Departments - became key in reaching physician offices for 1d2 AND 1d1!
7. And keep the old… Delaware’s Medical Society endorsed our Person Centered Care Initiative
Currently, MSD is investigating offering a malpractice insurance discount
8. Old friends in new places Medical Society of Delaware offers Quality Insights opportunities to present at its Annual Meetings
MSD promotes Cultural Competency among its membership groups like HMO Medical Directors, new physicians
9. Pluses… Using our partners to facilitate is a better use of our staff time and resources.
Working within the hospital setting gave us access to resources such as computers, and incentives, like dinner!
10. More pluses… Partners give each other more credibility.
Partner affiliation provides peer pressure.
Partnerships increase attendance.
11. And a few minuses… Group meetings do reduce one-on-one interaction.
Individual barriers may be difficult to identify.
Everyone works at different paces, and it’s a challenge to keep everyone on board.
12. Lessons learned Check your tech!
Provide an in-depth look at the tool upfront.
Complete agreements and pre-assessments before, or at time of, training. Pre-register participants when possible, and create their user IDs.
Research audience and look at how to use time most efficiently.
13. Time flies! Time management is crucial when faced with a small staff and smaller resources.
Key partnerships give us opportunities to reach more physicians at one time, place a greater weight on our message, and exert some peer pressure to conform.
