  2. There are two types of properties: Physical Properties Chemical Properties

  3. Physical Properties can be observed without changing the matter: • shape • state (solid, liquid, or gas) • density • color • smell • appearance

  4. Physical Properties • of this ball: • round shape • solid • red color

  5. Chemical Properties can only be tested by changingthe matter: • flammability (will it burn?) • oxidation (will it rust?) • volatility (will it explode?) • reactivity (will it react to chemicals?)

  6. Chemical Properties • of this flask: • not flammable • won’t rust • can explode if • over heated • won’t react to acid

  7. What are some Physical Propertiesfor this hamburger? • solid • round bun • many colors • smells tasty

  8. What are some Chemical Properties for this hamburger? • can burn • (except lettuce • and pickles) • won’t rust • won’t explode • will react to • stomach acid • by dissolving

  9. What are some Physical Properties for propane gas? • gas • no fixed shape • invisible • Smells like rotten eggs • very light density

  10. What are some Chemical Properties for propane gas? • will burn easily • gas won’t rust • (but tank will) • can explode! • can react with • other chemicals

  11. Is it a Physical Property or a Chemical Property? Strawberries are red with a green top. Physical Property!It doesn’t change the strawberry to check its color.

  12. Is it a Physical Property or a Chemical Property? Apples will oxidize and turn brown if left out in air. Chemical Property! It will change the apple to wait for it to brown.

  13. Is it a Physical Property or a Chemical Property? Copper wire conducts electricity Physical Property! It doesn’t change the copper wire to check conductivity.

  14. Is it a Physical Property or a Chemical Property? Alka Seltzer fizzes in water Chemical Property! It will change the Alka Seltzer to dissolve it in water.

  15. Is it a Physical Property or a Chemical Property? The density of gold is 19.3 g/mL Physical Property! It won’t change the gold to calculate its density.

  16. Physical Change • A change that alters the appearance of a material but doesn’t make that material into something new • Examples: • Tearing Paper • Chopping Wood • Molding Clay • Cutting Hair • Mixing Salt and Pepper • DOES NOT form a new substance

  17. Chemical Change • A change in matter that produces a new substance • Examples: • Fireworks • Food rotting • Lighting a match
