Roberto Benigni • TV and film star, writer, & director, considered a “national treasure” in Italy; married to film star (and co-star in this film) NicolettaBraschi • 1998, Life Is Beautiful won numerous awards, including Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Actor (the first for a male performer in a non-English speaking role), and Best Music, Original Dramatic Score; it was nominated for 4 more Oscars (Best Director – Benigni, Best Film Editing, Best Picture, Best Writing, Screenplay =- Benigni & VencenzoCerami). • Earned another 55 wins and 31 additional nominations for film-making prizes, including The Grand Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.* *imdb.com

Objectives • Primary objective: To compare and contrast Life Is Beautiful and The Road • Secondary objectives: • To consider contrasts in storytelling: • horrors of the Holocaust and elements of beauty and light • lighthearted comedy and dark tragedy • To identify and analyze the use of foreshadowing • To characterize the author’s tone • To analyze the characterization of Dora • To consider the hero archetype in Guido

  4. The Plan • Watch film over these next 3 days. • If you will miss any of the viewing days of the film, make plans to view it in its entirety by Monday at class time. I have 2 extra DVD copies and 1 Blue-Ray copy that students may borrow for one night or the weekend, or you can check one out of the public library. It is also rentable via Netflix and downloadable via various internet entities. PLEASE watch in with the Italian language playing and English subtitles, not dubbed in English. • Discussion/activities next Monday and Tuesday. • Complete the discussion guide by writing hearty, specific responses to the questions for Monday. See the directions on the handout for more information. No late work as we will use these in class.

  5. Per favore… • Per favore: Come to class ready to settle in immediately to watch the film. The schedule is tight. • Per favore: This is not a study hall, so do NOT try and do homework or sleep or chat or anything other than watch and study the film. It will hurt my feelings besides………. • Per favore: Avoid leaving the room during the film. Plan your restroom breaks to avoid missing any part of the film. • Per favore:Do not let these words, or others like them, to pass from your lips: “We’re just watching a movie.” • Grazie!

  6. Subtitles • We will be watching with the subtitles and leaving the beautiful Italian language in place. • Moves quickly at first and can be hard to follow. Lots of action. Just hang in there and do your best. Watch for foreshadowing….. • Enjoy!! La Vita E Bella!
