When Did Counting Start? • We really don’t know when! • We believe that human beings have been counting since they have had things to count. We can only be certain back to about 3500 BCE, (Recorded history).
What things do YOU think ancient man counted first? • Rocks? • Animals? • Arrows? • Crops? • Stars?
Why was it important that people started recording their numbers? • Architecture • Business • Music Hieroglyphics are pretty, but,
Can you imagine using Egyptian Hieroglyphics in today’s world?
Can you imagine how confusing a cell phone would be with Hieroglyphic numbers?
This sign is obviously in ancient Hieroglyphics. Why don’t we check it again after we learn a little about how the ancient Egyptians counted, about 3500 years ago.
Ancient Hieroglyphics: • Is an additive numbering system (that means that, no matter where you put the pictures in the block, they always add up to the same number), which uses pictures, or glyphs instead of numbers, in base 10, (we use base 10 also) • Don’t worry, it is a lot easier to use, than to describe!
