Chapter 6: Chemical Composition By: Jessica Walker, Sammie Purcell, Megan Lancaster, Walter Lopez, Andrea Cooper, Stephen Washington
Counting by Weighing • 1. Averaging the mass of similar products. • Example : Skittles • Average Mass = Total Mass/# of Skittles 2. Averaging the mass of different objects.Example: Hershey’s Kisses Average Mass = Average mass of Hershey’s Kisses/ Average mass of Skittles
Atomic mass: Counting Atoms by Weighing • AMU = Atomic mass unit • Average atomic mass is on the periodic table. • Example: mass of 1000 carbon atoms=(1000 atoms) • !2.01 amu/atom=12, 010 amu
Moles • Mole=Mol: number equal to the number of carbon atoms in 12.01 grams of carbon (average atomic mass) • 1 mol H= 1.008
Molar Mass • Mass of 1 mol of a substance • Ex: CH4 • Mass of 1 Mol of C= 1 x 12.01g • Mass of 4 mol of H= 4 x 1.008
