Priests/Confession/Mass • Priests were supposed to help people get to heaven • Medieval Christians believed that Priests could forgive them of their sins • Had to Confession their sins and complete penance • Mass = church service every Sunday…seen as a “Good Work”
Pilgrimage • Medieval Christians would make pilgrimages to holy sites • Shrines of great saints and leaders of the Church • Seen as an act of penance
Pardons and Indulgences • Could buy a “pardon” or “Indulgence” • Buying would forgive you of sins • OR get a dead family member time out of Purgatory
Paying for Prayers • People would pay others to pray for their soul after death • Rich = pay monks or monasteries to pray for their soul (sometimes every day for years!) • Poor = would pool their money together to get “colleges” to pay for all of their souls • Prayers = time out of Purgatory
Becoming a monk or nun • Seen as fastest route to heaven • Live life in an isolated community of monks and nuns • Spend time praying and working • Mainly from rich families
