YOUNG STEERT WEAR • Teddy boys • (1950’s Their clothes imitated the clothes during the reign of Henry VII) THE Mods (mid-60s introduced new style of dressing) The Rockers (1960 despised the Mods) The Punks (new style of music and dressing, still popular) The Hippies (the philosophy of peace and love) The Skinheads (1970s, known as bald-headed)
HIPPIES Towards the end of the 1960s , a new group appeared. Their ideas started in California in the USA. This new group was the Hippies.
Hippies’ philosophy They introduced the philosophy of love and peace, they gave flowers to strangers in the streets to surprise them. They opposed the accepted standards of ordinary society.
The name “hippies’’ comes from the fact that drug-takers in Asia and in the Far East used to lie on one hip while smoking drugs. Due to the word “hip” they were called “Hippies” smoking drugs too.
Dressing They showed their protest by dressing in unusual clothes. They enjoyed wearing cheesecloth kaftans and baggy trousers. They liked wearing ethnic jewellery and other accessories.
Dressing They wore sandals or walked barefoot. They also wore untidy and ripped clothes, Which they often customized with embroidery. Hippies were the first to wear Afghan coats and headbands.
